I have been a long time fan of Kevin Smith, but his recent foray into TV has left me slightly unnerved. Comic Book Men on AMC is a six part reality series that features Kevin Smith’s New Jersey comic book store Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash. The cast includes employees (Walt, Mike, Ming, & Bryan), fans, customers, and Smith, himself.

Unfortunately, Smith does not appear to be part of the daily activities in the store. Instead, he is part of a podcast featuring himself and the employees. Obviously, this is a tactic to connect his famous name to a show that networks might otherwise shy away from. But, the cutting back and forth between the taping of the podcast and the action in the store makes it confusing and disjointed. Something would happen in the store, then they would describe it and reflect, and then it would cut back to the action in the store, and then back to the podcast. There were other locations as well, making it difficult to identify the focus of the show. Is it the podcast? The store? Or this strange flea market?

As a self-proclaimed female nerd, my second problem with the show is the title. While pointing out the obvious that they are in fact all men, this title demonstrates an enormous assumption on their part that women do not read comic books or are not geeks or nerds as well. In episode one, the only female featured was a customer with a Chucky doll that she was trying to sell, and in “good old boy” fashion, she was the only customer they proceeded to point their fingers and outright say that the world needed to be ridded of such crazies. Never mind the fact that they were drooling over a Million Dollar Man doll earlier in the show.

I enjoy reality TV, but not when it comes across as scripted. The line delivery and interactions came across as over-planned and forced. For example, Ming, the store’s technical help, is used as comic relief and is even described on the AMC website as the ”go-to whipping boy.” Yet, it was like watching people who think they are hilarious, not realizing that they suck. By the end of the show, I had no interest in seeing what new discoveries these reality characters will find in future episodes. I will probably give this show one more chance, but only because The Walking Dead proceeds it. The second episode airs 2/19/12. Perhaps, Kevin Smith will redeem himself, and this will not turn into another Jersey Girl.

Ok, have you ever watched a reality show before. All reality shows have personal interviews about the previous scene. Hell even non reality shows like The Office and Modern Family do it now. At least this show is doing it in a more original way with the Pod Cast.

About the men vs women thing come on. Back in the 90's when I would go to the biggest comic shop in my city every week as a kid I would never see women, maybe once every couple of months. And moms bringing their kid looking annoyed to be there don't count. I know today is a little different but not by much. The title is referring to the people that work there not the people that come in or fans. You said you do not want a reality show that is scripted but to get more women in there or to just hire a woman to work at the shop for the show would be artificial and scripted.

Pawn Stars does not have any women as the main stars of that show either or even experts that come in. Do you have a problem with that show too? You do see women come in to sell stuff occasionally and I am sure you will see the same thing in the future on Comic Book Men. In fact I saw a women in the preview for next week. She looked like one of those "eye rolling" mothers I was talking about earlier. LOL

I know there are women out there that like comics and even history but they are few and far between. I am 33 years old and have never met a woman in real life as knowledgeable about comics as these guys or history as the guys on Pawn Stars or even as knowledgeable as I am on both of those subjects. I wish there were more but most women look at you like you are from mars when you talk about any of that stuff.

Look it was the first episode and usually it takes a few episodes for them to figure out what they are doing. Its happens with most shows like this. I am sure it will get better.

I'll be honest i wasn't impressed with the show, I don't like the Podcast idea and the editing seems a little bit off, i would rather just see whats going on at the store rather than cutting back and forth from the pod cast, the show was not what I expected and is half as fun as Stan Lees last couple of shows, kevin smith needs to be more involved in the show rather than things just be POD casted also the store looked like a mess these employees don't look like they clean the store nor do they watch out for there finances they just went around wasting money and giving stuff away, there just wasn't enough something to the show but maybe it will get better but so far not so impressed

Smith wants to find a female before next season. If she's not a true nerd girl there is no point. All respect I love needy chicks yall make my heart jump.
