I posted I was gonna review Enter The Mandarin but this has to be posted. I was in town and went to my comic shop looking for a TPB worth reading. When I saw this it caught my eye. I thought it was gonna be a cool action based story involving War Machine kicking lots of bad guy butt with bullets and missiles. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! This story explores so many subjects its crazy. It brings up racial issues A LOT in this book. The book was written by Chuck Austen and is presented in the Black and White Style(I thought I had a rare b/w version) and the look of the characters were odd.

In terms of a story its pretty basic, Rhodes joins SHIELD who replicate the War Machine armor and he gets a group of War Machines to command, each worn by a unique person. The group as usual is compromised by typical roles and one female who makes it difficult for the leader, the dumb white guy, an Asian, a Latino, and a pissed off Black guy. Even Dugan gets an armor with his styled hat part of it(shoot me). The underlaying story is about a group working with doom whos plan is to create a virus to kill all other races of people except white people.

I felt dirty reading this, I'm a person who's all about equality and brotherhood to all people, but this book, it made me feel unclean. I was looking forward to a violent take on this character, but not something about racial issues and corny characters. I can declare this one of my worst buys I ever bought in terms of a comic. The back of the book said it was controversial and it is, more so than One More Day. I guess I can put it this way, nice try but poor execution. this is the first review where I give it a 2/4 for story and a 1/4 for art. I really did not like the look of it, I gave it a try but at the end, it was bad. My next review will be more enthusiastic

i saw this on a shelf a few years ago and was tempted to read it........
i didn't.
for two reasons:
(1) i wasn't INTO comics yet. not really.
(2) from what i saw it was in black and white. there are only a few things i take in b/w. Fred Astaire movies OCCASIONALLY but not comics.

and then when i read that it wasn't on 616 continuity, i dropped the title altogether.

Yeah, the last one looked pretty good. It was about Cyborg War Machine trying to dismantle Norman's evil grip on the world or something. It was a Dark Reign tie in and it got real good reviews. I didn't pick it up though because I thought I'd feel too out of the loop not knowing why Rody is a cyborg.

Racial issues are tough execute in any story telling medium (movies, tv, books, comics, etc). It's gotta be done just right and there's pretty much no room for error. It's a real sensitive subject like religion. Everyone's got their own STRONG opinion on race issues and it is VERY easy to appear ignorant and close minded when writing on these issues. Writing about racial issues is like handling Uranium in a nuclear power plant--you gotta be very careful and know what the @%$# you're doing or you could hurt a lot of people.
