The Book of Eli is the latest Denzel Washington movie and is directed by the Hughes brothers. I highly recommend this movie and here is why:

The synopsis of the movie is as follows: MINOR spoilers; The movie takes place in a post apocalyptic world after a war (presumably nuclear) has ravaged the planet killing most of the inhabitants, and only a few survive to carry on. The movie takes place 30 years after said war, and there are only a handful of people old enough to remember life before the war. One of these people is Denzel, who is walking across the country heading west for an unknown reason. During this walk he encounters a town run by Gary Oldman, one of the other people old enough to remember life before the war. Oldman is looking for a book that he believes will give him power over the remaining survivors. It just so happens that Denzel is in possession of the only copy of said book still in existence. Here is the spoiler in case you havent figured it out yet. The book is the King James Bible. Apparently all the bibles were either destroyed by the war or burned afterwards by people who thought it was responsible for the war. Oldman wants to use it cause he believes its words can inspire the poor miserable masses to follow him as a new messiah so to speak. Since all the people alive are young they have never heard of christianity and have no idea what the big deal is about the book. Denzel believes it is his mission to protect the book and deliver it somewhere out west. Hence all the walking. (He has actually been wandering the wilderness for 30 years with this book heading west, if you've read the bible you know the signifigence of that). Several action scenes and biblical discussions occur and the movie goes on. Wont give away any more details except to say that there is a surprise ending that i was totally blindsided by and did not see it coming and was pretty cool.

As a movie and as religious commentary I found it really good. Great performances as always by Denzel and Oldman, and a decent turn by Mia Kunis (she is so fcking hot) as a post apocalyptic girl who tags along with Denzel. The action was good, though some might think not enough of it. The movie succeeds on dealing with the religious issue without being overly preachy or dismissive and insulting (which is usually the case with hollywood movies). If your a christian you will like it, and if you are not you will like it as well. It deals with both the good and the bad of religion in a respectful and informative way. It did have a few cheesy moments, and several post apocalyptic characters that are so cliched they go all the way back to mad max. But overall it was gritty, realistic, inspirational, and just a downright well put together movie. If your looking for straight action with no substance (lee77) then this movie is not for you. But if you want a movie that you actually have to think, and the action serves the story and the characters then this movie is definately for you. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

And yeah i know its not a comicbook movie, but neither is legion and that add has been playing all week at the top of the page, and neither are video game movies but there always on here too, so deal with it. :)

Great review, Dog! I wasn't sure at first since Denzel is almost over the hill for straight up action films IMO but since it's not, it sounds very much worth seeing ;)

I agree with those points. As for the lucky as he'll shooting, the row boat, how he survived a bullet etc....I thought it was clear when he said he heard a voice inside his head saying he would be protected. It's a faith thing. God provided his protection and the boat gas etc...that was my point about the Moses roaming the desert for thirty years reference. Hence why he could do all the stuff he did while blind. God was steering him. You know, once was blind but now I see. That's the way I took it all anyway. As for her driving the cars there were cars in The town and she was kind of the daughter of the leader And the thug had a crush on her so it's not far fetched to believe someone showed her how to drive. Afterall she had been to the springs where the water comes before (presumably that's how she knew where it was), and you probably have to drive there. As for her going off alone, the point is she's wiser now, and has a mission of her own. Maybe god will protect her too. I agree that part was a little cheesy, as I said in my review it has cheesy parts.
