Strange Tides for POTC sequels as it seems that Depp is going to be replaced.

I for one have enjoyed Pirates of the Carribean, especially the antics of Capt. Jack Sparrow. I loved the mythology that they had created for that show, and I like how they don't take things too seriously. But this news of Depp being replaced is of serious matter, I know that Disney has a knack of continuing with sequels that doesn't have their previous main actors on board. I know it's all about marketing but the returns for those sequels is less desirable than the originals. So, I don't think its sound to have a different face for POTC.

Article from MTV reads:

Following the recent departure of Disney studio chief Dick Cook, Johnny Depp admitted to being less enthusiastic about returning to the role of Captain Jack Sparrow for "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" ("Pirates" part 4, for those who lost count). And the fans in turn admitted that they'd give up on the franchise without him in it.

That apparently isn't stopping Disney though. According to a tip received by Cinema Blend, the studio is preparing to replace Depp if/when he decides to abandon ship. This may not happen with "On Stranger Tides," as Disney is likely prepared to offer him as much money as it takes to keep him aboard. The actor, who is said to be aware the last two movies "sucked," will definitely not be sticking around for the fifth and sixth installments if the tipster is to be believed.

I know Johnny said he might jump ship, but I also recall him saying he liked the last pirates movie the best, so I'd take this tipster with a grain of salt as it smaks of fanboy elitism towards the sequels.

Everyone will work for the right amount of money. Sooner or later noone cares about their career as long as the check has enough 'zeros' behind it.

This movie will not be made without him. Is anyone seriously implying that? They will throw ungodly amounts of money at him to do it - and I seriously doubt they'll need to. He's gone on the record a billion times saying how much he loves the character and wants to play Sparrow again. This is just one of those blips that gets out of control because people want to see something go wrong.

If they should throw anyone out of the movie it's orlando bloom, that guy sucks.

So he might leave, it isnt for definite yet? Because if Johnny Depp leaves, the Pirates movies will crash and burn.

I mean how many of you would actually go see a Pirates movie if Jack Sparrow isnt in it? I love the rest of the cast but Johnny Depp is the glue that holds the Pirates movies together. Take him out, they are gonna suck

Nice article access

yeah they can't make this witout depp. unless they focus on other characters this time, which woudn't be a bad idea actually. new trilogy, new characters. i don't really care though, the first was the only good one. the other two were convoluted nonsense

They wouldnt replace jack sparrow. That would be a chump move. I could see them focusing the stories to other pirates and adventures. But personally I wouldnt want to see anyone else as capt jack sparrow. Depp is sparrow... thats the point. Michael keaton will always be batman to me. He dawned when I was young. Previous batmans may still be the only real batman to those who were there when that was out. And kids today may only see chrisitian bale as the only real batman.

I personally disliked all three films but part one was considered the most "likable" of the three.

If he returns or not, some people would return to the theater to see the direction the film takes...especially if the replacement is someone they're interested in. I've seen them all during their theatrical run to prove my initial perception that the film won't be something I'll enjoy so when this comes out, I will see it as well.

The last two suuuuucccccccked....but I still paid to see them because Capt. Jack Sparrow rules.

I liked all three films, but I think if they keep Depp on for a fourth one it would become a kids film where children can laugh at him goofing around on screen for a couple of hours. The story of Bloom and Knightly's characters is pretty much over, so all that is left is Jack Sparrow.

I just hope they don't fulfill their seeming promise from the end of the third one and make him live forever...
Evil1991
Evil1991 - 9/29/2009, 7:22 PM
I think the last two moved along way to slowly... Some parts were really epic, the kracken was bad ass... They just need a good plot that keeps me interested, without 50 other things for me to have to keep track of.... And Johnny Dep needs to return!
though I can do without will and his girlfriend in the next one... We also need barbosa he's the best!

I agree if they make a fourth it's going to just be for kids, it would be pretty cool if they made it darker...but I know to expect less from disney. Oh well, don't do it Johnny, don't sell out!

If this is true, I won't see it. And I don't think Depp's in it for the money - look at Imaginarium, he did that for free... or for the proceeds going to Heath's kids. He seems pretty idealistic about his craft to me.

The franchise has mad potential, but they can never replace nor top cap'n Jack. Any additional sequels without him could turn out decent, but they'll ALWAYS be missing something. It's a bad idea, but greed will probably prevail on the studio's side.

And as far as 2 and 3 "sucking", everyone's entitled to their opinions. I find them just to be different - but still great. They're just different. I'll grant you 1 is the masterpiece, but I don't think you could fairly or reasonably say any of the trilogy sucks. I personally enjoy the radical departure of styles in all 3 movies. And incase anybody didn't notice, they were attempting to pack in and explore all the pirate history and mythology - they covered alot of ground, but there's still plenty left.
