THE PUNISHER Showrunner Reveals Which Villains He Hopes To Bring To Season 2 And They Sound Awesome

The first season of The Punisher has been well-received by fans and critics alike but which bad guys should we expect to see Frank Castle target if and when a second batch of episodes is released?

The Punisher only hit Netflix a few days ago but showrunner Steve Lightfoot already has some ideas for where he'd like to take the story next. The first season focused more on a big government conspiracy than Frank Castle gunning down mobsters but it thankfully sounds like a second season would revolve more about the type of villains the vigilante has squared off with in the comic books over the years.

In fact, Lightfoot has some specific names in mind for which characters he hopes to bring to the big screen and his suggestions will almost certainly make fans of Garth Ennis' work very happy indeed.

"I haven’t even thought about Season 2," he claimed before adding, "but one of the villains I love is Barracuda [from Garth Ennis’ Punisher MAX series]. "I think he’s great fun. I also really like O’Brien [also introduced in Ennis’ Punisher MAX run]. I thought she was always really cool. Certainly those two jump out at me initially, but there are so many great characters there. It’s a very fun sandbox."

The Punisher featured a lot of newly created characters so bringing these two into the show would be awesome. Barracuda is a former Marine who was hired to assassinate Frank, while Kathryn O'Brien was a former CIA operative who teamed up with the vigilante to take down her corrupt ex-husband.

What do you hope to see from season two if and when it happens? Share your thoughts down below.

how much punishment of crime is in the show and how frequent?

@grif - Grif, my friend, that is my only complaint. Even though there are more than enough stories about The Punisher dealing with the government in the comics, I feel like season 1 of a brand new character should focus on what he does most as a character, which is fight crime and the mob.

Fortunately this show is so good that I can overlook that. As long as they don't constantly have him fighting the government every season.

Yessssssssss! Was hoping for Barracuda in series 1, but I'll take him next time. He's so [frick]ing tough.

Up to episode 4 of the show now.

As much as I like O'Brien and Rawlins from Ennis' Punisher MAX, I would still rather season 2 focus more on Frank going after the mob. The parts from that run that focus on Nicky Cavella were my favorite and they could easily make a season out of it. Bring in Pittsy and Ink as his lackeys.

Also, they could keep the government connection alive by having the CIA trying recruit Frank to go fight terrorism. This is where they could introduce O'Brien and Rawlins and set that story up for season 3.

And the great thing is everything I mentioned is from the MAX run.

Barracuda was cool and all, and a good challenge for Frank, but he started out as nothing more than a hired hitman. His 2nd story was just him trying to get revenge. There really isn't much depth to his story, even though he was a great character. A season focusing on Barracuda would be kind of lackluster I feel.

@CorndogBurglar - As much as I like Nicky Cavella from MAX, I think we would rather have Gnucci family, since they were established in this season. Besides we will definitely get Jigsaw, so I think Pittsy and Ink could work for him like in the War Zone movie. Nicky could be a villain for season 3.

@Demo2nd - I wouldn't disagree with that. They could make Cavella a member of the Gnucci family. After Frank deals with them in season 2, have Cavella come back in season as the "banished" family member. The last one alive that could restucture the family.

I still feel Pittsy and Ink should be with him though. But they can explain why he wasn't around in season 1 and 2 by telling his story of being sent away for nearly starting a war between the Gnuccis and the Yakuzas. With nearly all the Gnuccis dead he sees an opportunity to come in and take over.

@Demo2nd - I just really like Nicky Cavella. He's such a psycho.

My 2 cents:

I hoped the serie would reach DD/JJ quality-level, and it didn't.
But...i'm actually ok with it.
It's very consistent, there aren't many ups and downs, it basically mantains the same flow throughout all the episodes, it even follows a particular structure, it always starts slow, then they make some room for the action.
So maybe there are some filler episodes, but you can't feel em, and i enjoyed all 13 episodes.

I thought something was missing, an "X factor" that keeps you glued to the tv, which could easily translate into a badas villain.
I mean there are many, but he mainly fights the system, not one particular bad guy, you can single out a couple of em, but they aren't no Fisk or Kilgrave...

But the serie it's solid...a lot.
Jon f*cking nailed it, if it wasn't for him, everything would look cheap, he gave his 200%, and i never doubted him.

There are only few actor THIS invested in a role, DC has Cavill, Fox had Jackman, and now Marvel has Jon.
Don't get me wrong, there are MANY great actors in this business, but ppl like Jon...they are something else.
He was a f*cking beast here, ep 12 is my favorite, no other Netflix show managed to get me excited with a "wow moment" like *that*. I had goosebumps and i couldn't stand still.

It's not great, but it's very very good, and after LC, IF, Defenders, i'll take it.

DD and JJ are still my top 2, Punisher doesn't have many flaws tbh, not like DD and especially JJ, but it also didn't managed to reach those heights, so....
