Following our recent first look at Kate Winslet's Ronal, Empire Magazine (via SFF Gazette) has shared the subscribers cover for their latest issue along with a new still from James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water, and they come with a surprising reveal relating to the new character played by Sigourney Weaver!

When it was first announced that the Alien icon would be returning for this sequel, fans generally assumed that she would either be playing the late Grace Augustine via flashback, or that the good doctor's consciousness would somehow be resurrected in a new body.

Well, as it turns out, Weaver is actually playing a brand-new character: Jake and Neytiri’s adoptive teenage daughter, Kiri!

“I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents,” Weaver tells Empire about being enlisted to play a much younger character. “I certainly do. I was 5’ 10” or 5’ 11” when I was 11. I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She’s searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by Jim.”

“As an acting challenge, it’s big,” adds Cameron. “We’re gonna have a 60-something actor playing a character [decades younger than] her actual biological age. Sig thought it was all kinds of fun.”

Get your first look at Kiri via Empire's latest subscriber-only cover and a new image below.

Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the film stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement and Kate Winslet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit theaters in December 16th, 2022.

I'd make an educated guess that she's an infant clone of Grace. As it looks like Lang is playing a cloned younger avatar of his Quaritch.

I know alot of people talk crap about Avatar but I'm genuinely looking forward to Cameron giving something new to cinema's. No matter your opinion of the guy his movies are always spectacles. He doesn't make it unless it breaks new ground. I'm more than willing to pay the extra for the 3d aswell, as with him you know it's not just a gimmick.

@UnderBelly - That's what I assumed as well... but surprised they didn't confirm it in the article.

@RorMachine - The five fingered hand kind of gave it away. She also may be the Na'Vi incarnation of Eywah after she was absorbed, which is prob why they didn't want to give more away.

@RorMachine - it's probably meant to be some kind of twist

@UnderBelly - Exactly. Dude lives long enough to become the villain. Yes, it's taken some time, and laughs have been had because of it, but isn't this what people should want? A film that pushes the boundaries and limits of what we've come to expect. Even if you're not a fan of the story, with Cameron involved I expect it to be visually stunning.

I see a lot of skepticism here, but Sigourney Weaver is working with James Cameron again. That’s awesome enough for me.

@MosquitoFarmer - ikr? Also, saw the trailer for this at the start of jurassic world domination in 3d. It really reminded me just how awesome of an experience the first avatar was. Now I'm super excited for this.

In fact I would recommend seeing jurassic world in 3d just to see that trailer in 3d.

@MosquitoFarmer - The more I think about what is in this article the more excited I am to see this movie. At first Sigourny playing a kid sounded dumb to me but this could actually be a fantastic character and I can't wait to see what she does with this role!

I feel like she’s either a clone or they are doing the whole “circle of life” thing where a version of her consciousness was saved into that tree of life thing and was reborn through the daughter

@Ha1frican - I'm guessing clones are gonna be a big part of these films given that the deceased human bad guy from the first movie is coming back for all five films.

More Sigourney Weaver is always a good thing.

It's funny; when the trailer first dropped and that shot from the magazine of her underwater popped up, I thought "That kinda looks like Sigourney Weaver's avatar from the first movie." But I just figured that it was a new character being played by a younger actress who just happened to kinda look like Sigourney Weaver, and I wrote it off.

Didn't see this coming. It's kind of bold and also what only could be done thanks due to today's CGI and the design of this world's characters.

I even save my comments for here, knowing I'm the only one commenting on there otherwise.

I am actually getting less excited for this movie the more of the original cast returns. Just makes it feel like it's trying too hard to be like the first one.

Didn't they use the Tree of Life or whatever it was called to make Weaver's character a Na'vi too? Or am I just remembering things wrong?

Anyway, think it's a pretty cool way to bring back cast members.

Crtdacct2say
Crtdacct2say - 7/2/2022, 6:12 PM
@Vigor - yes. Fancy effects but it was terribly uninteresting. The action was dull and the drama was dull. I'm aware it earned a lot of money but I've yet to meet a person that enjoyed it

Interesting! Is it a case of reincarnation. Isn't jake supposed to be the reincarnation of the first guy who flew and tamed the giant dragon creature?

Are they going to alter her voice or are we going to have to get used to a teen talking in Weaver's old lady voice?
