Emily Blunt & Director Doug Liman Offer Updates On The Upcoming EDGE OF TOMORROW Sequel

While we've known for a while that the long-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel is expected to start rolling cameras early next year, it looks like it could've actually started sooner. Come get the latest!

Last we heard, Tom Cruise's eagerly-awaited Edge of Tomorrow sequel wasn't expected to go into production until either late this year or early 2019, but thanks to a new interview with co-star Emily Blunt, it sounds like cameras could have started rolling at least a year ago - although it's probably for the best that production was delayed until the script was finalized and everyone's schedules had cleared up.

Speaking with Indiewire, Blunt reaffirmed her commitment to the sequel and revealed that Cruise actually reached out to her about starting work a little over a year ago. “It’s a lot for all the stars to align for everyone to be free at the same time and available to do it at the same time. They asked me to do [it] two months before I started ‘Mary Poppins.’ Tom was like, ‘Can you go this autumn?’ and I was like, ‘No, I can’t go, I’m playing Mary Poppins for like a year, dude! I can’t do ‘Edge of Tomorrow.'”

Considering production on Mary Poppins Returns ran from January to July (not including additional photography), it's probably safe to assume that the studio was eyeing a potential fall 2017 or early 2018 start date at first, but since that didn't pan out, it allowed Blunt to star in her husband's critically-acclaimed horror film, A Quiet Place, which shot from May to November. Meanwhile, Cruise shifted his focus to another action sequel, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, but did experience a slight setback when production was shut down for nearly two months after Cruise broke his ankle in August performing a death-defying stunt.

Regardless, Blunt seems increasingly enthusiastic about returning as Rita Vrataski and offered up another exciting tease about the sequel's story, “Doug Liman has got an awesome idea and he’s excited and they just need to write it. There has been a script, but now I gather there’s another one in the works.” While unconfirmed, it's likely that Blunt will tackle the long-gestating Edge of Tomorrow sequel at the tail-end of this year or early next year after wrapping Disney's Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson this summer.

Speaking of that new script, in a separate interview with Collider, director Doug Liman, who will return to helm the sequel, coyly teased the film's ambitious story, which may be a little hard to translate from page-to-screen, "We have an amazing story, and we’re just figuring out if it’s actually feasible to do." He continues, "I’m hoping we’ll know soon. I think we’ll know very soon, if we can do it or not."

Liman also revealed that he's currently working on finishing up the latest draft of the film's script with Jez Butterworth, who was one of the three credited screenwriters on the first film alongside Chris McQuarrie and John-Henry Butterworth. "I’m working with Jez Butterworth, right now. He’s an amazing playwright. He wrote Jerusalem, and he has The Ferryman going on, right now, in London. He did the rewrites on Mr. & Mrs. Smith. He wrote Fair Game. He’s done Sam Mendes’ James Bond films. He’s a genius."

The first film is such a fantastic, smart, well acted movie, one of my favorites actually; it has an unlimited rewatchability factor. One of the best action films of the decade. Looking forward to what they do with the sequel.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I agree, not a single movie has had that level of VFX ever since. Imagine Black Panther, Wonder Woman, any CBM, really, with that level of perfection. Only thing that makes me hopeful for Aquama is that some of the same people are working on it. Then again they also worked on Justice League and Wonder Woman. I really wonder why some movies end-up breathtaking in terms of VFX, and others barely decent. Same companies. Maybe the teams and project leaders differ, IDK.

I loved the first film. It replaced the winter soldier-not in terms of quality- as the movie I would turn on at night.

This movie was what convinced me Emily Blunt would be a perfect Carol Danvers. I just loved it when I saw it and was so pleasantly surprised.

I’m hoping they don’t actually do a sequel but a prequel. The story is pretty well closed off at the end of the last one but I’d love to see the Battle of Verdun from Vertasky’s perspective

@Ha1frican - That's what Doug Liman has indicated, that it will be a sequel that becomes a prequel. He said its supposed to redefine what it means to do a sequel to a film.

This film was the best surprise I had at theaters in the past decade. My whole family went to see it, not knowing anything about it other than that it had that Ground Hog day style of story. When we left the theater, everyone in my family agreed that it was the most entertaining thing we've seen in a long time! Can't wait for a sequel!!
