LOKI Head Writer Michael Waldron Reveals His Approach To Kevin Feige's Upcoming STAR WARS Movie

Michael Waldron penned both Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness for Marvel Studios, and his next project is Kevin Feige's Star Wars movie. Here's what he was able to reveal about that...

Since winning an Emmy for his work on Rick and Morty, Michael Waldron has quickly become one of the most highly sought after writers in Hollywood. After serving as Loki's Head Writer, he signed an overall deal with Disney that includes Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's upcoming Star Wars movie.

Talking to GQ, Waldron was asked about heading to a Galaxy Far, Far Away for the first time in his career, and it sounds like he plans to take the franchise back to its roots with this story.

"I think the success of the MCU is, for all the amazing science-fiction and concepts and all that stuff; ultimately the success is built upon the characters, their humanity, their very relatable conflicts, friendships, and the family that is the MCU," he explained. "And I think Star Wars, at its best, is a story about family. Han, Luke, and Leia were a family; you love seeing them together, and you hated it when they were split apart. It’s great characters. That’s nothing new. I am not going to blow anybody’s mind with that headline—but that’s my biggest takeaway."

Of course, Waldron couldn't - and wouldn't - share any details on what Feige has planned for this extremely secretive Star Wars movie, but the writer had nothing but good things to say about the producer's input. "The thing Kevin Feige shares in common with Dan Harmon and with Sam Raimi is an absolute collaborative spirit and a remarkable lack of ego given what he’s accomplished."

"Kevin is a great listener. He wants to hear your ideas, take in how you might do something, and then help you make it better," he continued. "Beyond all that, he’s just a cool guy."

Waldron clearly has a bright future in both the MCU and Star Wars Universes, and we can only speculate on what he and Feige have planned for the latter franchise. We wouldn't be surprised if their movie revisisted the era of the original trilogy, though we could be in store for a completely new story (expanding on this Galaxy's history or even delving into its future).

Either way, you'd best believe Feige has some far-reaching plans...

''Han, Luke, and Leia were a family; you love seeing them together, and you hated it when they were split apart''

I'm gonna take this as a shot at the sequels, because I hated it when they weren't brought together again the sequels. Biggest missed opportunity.

Anyway, I look forward to his Star Wars movie. Think he would fit well for a story that explored the origin or early days of the Jedi Order.

Let Waldron write the true George canon sequels to the Original Trilogy!

Seriously tho, ep 1 of Loki was fantastic. Waldron is the best writer working in the MCU right now by far.

That was a big detriment to the sequels. Luke, Han, and Leia were never on screen together as a trio. I liked TLJ's rejection of nostalgia in theory, but a little nostalgia, as a treat isn't bad. Anyway, this could be an interesting venture for the MCU team

You never hear anything negative about Feige. Either he's got the best PR team in Hollywood or he's genuinely as cool as everyone says he is.

@McMurdo
WB/DC's films DO have the sporadic auteure success that you've been talking about. Joker and Harley Quinn were critically well received. And we're about to get an alternate version of Batman with Pattinson, which LOOKS LIKE it could be great. And all these disconnected movies WOULD be great if (now stay with me here) IF Warner Brothers hadn't just reversed course on the Snyder Cut. Suddenly his cut is cannon. Now that's fine for you and me - we're used to reboots. Hell, if the universe doesn't change every summer, we wonder what's gone wrong? Is DC folding? What happens when Pattison's Batman (along with it's auteure visions) is a huge hit. And the powers at WB see the cash grab possibilities of making HIM part of the Justice League?!?!?
My point is, these individual, "stand alone" films are not what DC/WB covets the most: a shared, cohesive universe, to be done THEIR WAY. But every time a movie fails to meet expectations, the PR department is shoved out in the limelight to try and rewrite history.

@KrazyForKomix - facts. Well put. They are just taking more chances, doing things that are risky like casting 3 Batman’s at once. Making rated R properties, hiring Oscar winners to write scripts with full free reign budget-wise. I like the MCU, Wandavision and Loki have been great IMO, but I’m more excited for DC feature films because I know that the cohesiveness is not the draw, people like Gunn, Phillips, Reeves are signing on because they know they are allocated full creative control over the films they want to make. They are far more pro-art pro-creator than Feige is currently, and what happened to Derrickson proves this. I do find it warming to hear Waldron claim he had no restrictions with Loki and was allowed to make it stand on its own. After ep 1, I’m really hot on Waldron and I think he may be the best writer working for the Feige. So him getting to re-write Dr Strange 2 is hype. My only concern with that film is that the story for how it continues the MCU was set prior to him and Raimi taking over so although they got to rewrite the script, the amount of actual plot they got to creat from scratch is most likely quite slim.
