STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Actor Mark Hamill On The Possibility Of Luke Skywalker Turning To The Dark Side

A certain line in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi teaser has let to speculation that Luke might be heading down a darker path. Find out what Mark Hamill has to say about that after the jump...

Friday's first teaser for Star Wars: The Last Jedi avoided giving too much away about the movie's plot (as a teaser should), but the last line spoken by the returning Luke Skywalker has had fans speculating that a turn to the dark side might be on the cards for the reclusive Jedi.

Though it does look like Luke will agree to train Rey, the line "it's time for the Jedi to end" certainly has some potentially ominous connotations, and might suggest that the son of Anakin Skywaler wants the Jedi to end, as opposed to simply fearing that their time has come.

During an interview with ABC, Mark Hamill commented on the reaction to the teaser, and says he was as surprised as the rest of us when he read that particular line in the script:

"There's a difference between teaser and a trailer. A teaser is supposed to show you dynamic images that heighten your awareness and make you want to see the trailer, but avoid all story points if at all possible. [But] I think that's the only story point that’s in the teaser, which is Luke saying it's time for the Jedi to end. It was as shocking to me to read what Rian [Johnson, the director] had written as I'm sure it will be for the audience."

When asked outright if he thought Luke could ever turn to the dark side, Hamill responded: "It's possible, anything's possible."

What do you guys think? Is Luke ultimately destined to be Rey's enemy in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, or is this just a massive red herring? Sound off below.

@Kyos - Luke wouldn't turn full Dark Side.

It seems pretty obvious to me that he has realized the Jedi have their own issues. For instance, not being able to openly love another person led to the creation of one of the most powerful Sith to ever live and allowed the entire galaxy to fall into a state of oppression.

However, the Jedi do have very good teachings as well. The Sith on the other hand have more bad qualities than good, but they actually encourage being passionate and letting their emotions guide them.

So again, it seems pretty obvious to me that Luke has had an epiphany that there is a balance that should be struck between the two ideals and that somewhere in the middle is the answer. This would lead to the end of both the Jedi and the Sith, which would perfectly explain him saying "its time for the Jedi to end."

Having said that, I don't think either side would ever completely go away. There will always be people that come along to keep those ideals alive.

Kill them, kill them all Luke.

I don't think so. I just think he's finally figured out that the restrictions of the Jedi code cause as many problems as they do the Sith extremists. For starters, if Anakin had just been allowed to openly love Padme, it would have been a lot harder for Palpatine to sway him. And the Jedi should not work for the goverment.

@WYLEEJAY - Maybe it's him losing faith in the concept of the light side due to his experience of losing people after doing what he was told was his destiny, with Rey guiding him back. Thusly making it a mentor relationship both ways. I just don't see at this point them going the grey area like that considering all the problems in the new trilogy so far are all dark side users. Remember, it is meant to be at least fairly self contained so you don't have to have seen the original trilogy or the prequels to enjoy.

@Origame - Then the story won't evolve as well as it could. There are fans out there, that want so badly for it to be as simple as Jedi vs Sith, Light vs Dark. But it's not that simple. One Force, but good and bad people that can use it. I don't think this trilogy will be about Jedi vs Sith.

@WYLEEJAY - Well again you have to see it from the perspective of Disney creating a Star Wars series for kids who otherwise weren't exposed to it. They don't have the adventures we did. Maybe we'll have a Chapter 10 where that happens but as for right now I feel it will be about Rey building a new light side organization fixing the issues with the Jedi the same way the Knights of Ren are the new Sith.

I don't see it happening. Maybe a little Gray in Luke's Jedi status, but never fully Darkside.
