New ALIEN: COVENANT Behind-The-Scenes Image Teases The Return Of The Space Jockey

Legendary director Sir Ridley Scott turned 79 today, and to mark the occasion 20th Century Fox has released a new behind-the-scenes still from his latest installment in the Alien franchise. As you can see, one of the creatures that have come to be known as "Space Jockeys" can be seen in the background.

This race was first introduced in the original Alien in the form of fossilized remains, but we got to learn a little more about them in Scott's divisive prequel, Prometheus. Hopefully Alien: Covenant will go some way towards explaining exactly how these giant beings and the xenomorph are connected.

“Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the ‘synthetic’ David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.”

Alien: Covenant stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Demien Bichir and Danny McBride, and is set to hit theaters on August 4, 2017.

Prometheus ruined the intrigue about the character and by revealing they are essentially large blue'ish humanoid beings who are basically trying to exterminate entire planets, specifically Earth for some reason, because they worship Xenomorphs (that didn't exist at this stage) it didn't work.

@Scarilian - Yeah that attempt at explaining the mythology was a mess. I didn't hate Prometheus but I don't think anyone involved with the writing really knew what the [frick] they were doing.

@RorMachine - Yeah, its one of those unfortunate situations where it had interesting concepts when being made, but none of them really transitioned well to film. Plus it does one of those annoying things in Sci-Fi movies where every character is written less intellectual than they are during certain scenes so that it can justify them doing stupid things.

@Scarilian - I though the whole idea was pretty cool. Plus, they are still a mistery. We don't know why they were creating weapons, why that one suddenly wanted to destroy the Earth, and more important of all, why the hell did that dude commit suicide in the beginning, and did he intend to create the human race by doing it?

Either flashback scene or the start of the film.

@thor2273 - Well, at least they'll have more time to get a decent script together (David Koepp being involved doesn't inspire much confidence).

I really enjoyed Prometheus but I can understand how it handled the Space Jockey wrong.

This new installment will either be a hard miss or a surprise hit from Ridley. The Alien franchise is at a point where its questionable to wonder if there's anything else worth exploring.

Prometheus had a good concept, but maybe the overall product didn't deliver. Give the man a break his brother committed suicide recently.
