AVATAR 2 Won't Arrive Until 2015 At The Earliest

James Cameron gives a brief update on the sequel to his sci-fi film Avatar, confirming that it will not hit theaters until 2015 or possibly later. Also, he says that previous talk about a fourth film in the series was "premature".

Since becoming the highest grossing film of all time when it was released, a sequel to director James Cameron's science fiction epic Avatar has been virtually inevitable. While the second film in the proposed trilogy was initially scheduled for a late 2014 release, producer Jon Landau stated earlier this year that Avatar 2 reaching that date would be unlikely. Now, speaking with The New York Times, Cameron offers an update on the sequel.

Talking to the NY Times' reporters, Cameron says that the second film in his planned Avatar trilogy "will not be ready until 2015 or later." Cameron is still working on both screenplays and then plans to New Zealand, where he and his family expect to live for at least a year and a half while the Titanic director shoots his Avatar sequels. According to Cameron, the sequels will most likely be shot in Peter Jackson's Wellington production studio, while Jackson's nearby WETA Digital visual effects compound will finish the special effects.

Additionally, last month, Cameron teased the possibility of a fourth Avatar movie (he also said that he likely won't direct any non-Avatar projects in the near future). A rumor even suggested that all three sequels will be shot simultaneously (which would be a very impressive feat if done right). According to NY Times, Cameron has said that talk about a fourth film "was premature", while not ruling it out either. Many thanks to The Playlist for the heads up regarding this report.

Not much is known about the possible storyline for Avatar 2. Cameron has expressed interest in exploring the other moons of Polyphemus and widening the universe; the sequel is said to be focusing on Pandora's ocean (as well as having more of the rain forest setting featured in the original film). Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver are expected to be reprising their roles from the first movie.

Wow wth. I really liked Avatar but I only saw it once. Also, that was when I saw it in 3D so I don't know if it would have the same impact on me if i saw it again without the 3D.

At least the real 3D will be put to use. Alot of copy cats today using the lack luster post conversion, instead of the fusion 3D camera system that he built. But yea, the hype isn't going to be there this time, I'll still watch it tho.

Avatar is a great popcorn movie, but the most predictable story. I just hope the sequel doesn't go 4D

Only reason I'd want to see this is to see how much CGI will have advanced. For 2009 Avatar looked absolutely spectacular, the visuals were amazing. Other than that everything was extremely "meh".

God I hated Avatar!! If anyone wants to see why the economy sucks, look at James Cameron and George Lucas. By seeing their movies we're putting our hard earned money in their wallets and making the rich richer. Cameron's got a special throne reserved for him in Hell next to Howard Hughes and Ted Turner and George Lucas.

I really enjoyed Avatar, and the fact that they are taking their time to make sure that the sequel(s) is/are done right is a comfort. James Cameron is an unmatched quality director.

Who cares when it comes out. I am sorry I thought this movie was over hyped and the story was just copied from every other cookie cut movie out there if you ask me.

I agree with other posters, Cameron, Lucas, even Speilberg need to hang it up if you ask me!

Though the story of Avatar was a rehashed version of A Man Called Horse and Dances With Wolves, I loved the 3d and look forward to two more entries in the series.
