AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Sinks TITANIC To Become Third Highest-Grossing Movie Of All Time

Though Titanic's re-release may cause some back-and-forth, Avatar: The Way of Water has now overtaken James Cameron's epic romance to become the third highest-grossing movie of all time globally...

There's a good reason people say "never bet against James Cameron," but could anyone have predicted just how successful his Avatar sequel would turn out to be?

The Way of Water has gone from being perceived as the "sequel no one wanted" when it was first announced, to the third highest-grossing film of all time after passing Titanic's global gross.

Now, it'll need to catch Marvel Studios' mighty Avengers: Endgame and the original Avatar to take the #1 spot. Is it doable? Short of a re-release, we'd say it's unlikely, but who knows - the movie is showing no signs of slowing down even after almost two months on general release.

Titanic - which Cameron also helmed - was recently re-released itself, so we may see some back-and-forth as the movies overtake each other at the box office, but analysts believe The Way of Water will ultimately come out on top.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

Titanic is still a better movie, but congrats.

@MosquitoFarmer - Of those three movies, none of them are actually good movies (yeah, I said it), while Titanic, from a technical and directional point, is one of the best movies ever made.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I dare even agree with you.

Avatar, Endgame, Titanic and The Way of Water are not that great, but each still manages to excell in atleast one area that puts it high above the rest.

@TheMandalorian - someone who hasn't seen it, doesn't know why it's making this much money.. hmm

Had to happen soon enough. Doubt it'll be Endgame though.

Wonder if Avatar 3 will do as great too. But even if not, the top 6 highest grossing movies is probably just gonna be Avatar and Avengers movies in 2026.

The “no cultural impact” crowd have been awful quiet lately 😂

@GetsugaTensho22 - I still stand by it. I literally still don't know a single person who has seen it, and outside of stories like this talking about it's numbers, I don't hear anyone talking about it. I've also yet to hear a single thing about the story outside of fire tribes coming in Avatar 3, and I don't even know if that's teased in this movie or if it was just confirmed after the movie came out.

Just as an example, I'll compare it to one of Cameron's own movies Titanic. That movie undoubtedly still has a cultural impact. People still stand on the edge of a boat and scream they are king of the world, make jokes when things are bad that "it's been an honor playing with you", talk about being drawn like a French girl, and debate whether Jack couldve fit on that door. It literally is a part of the zeitgeist.

Can you honestly say that about Avatar? Where is it in the zeitgeist?

@GetsugaTensho22 - cultural impact has nothing to do with making money. Spider-Man No Way Home is a fun nostalgia trip that made 1.9 billion dollars. ZERO cultural impact. Just to show it's not a Cameron/Marvel thing (even though it's all Disney).

Aquaman made 1.14 billion dollars. Are you going to try and argue it had a cultural impact?

@SATW42 - Saying that No Way Home had no cultural impact is a WILD statement? How are you even quantifying "cultural impact" at this point?

If it doesn't surpass avengers they will just release it until it does. Cameron is fixated on being the best. They should rerelease avengers endgame

Well that record will stay until at least Avengers:The Kang Dynasty or Avengers:Secret Wars because haven't got anything else to touch these movies.

@marvel72 - The way things have been going in the MCU recently, I don’t see those films making the same kind of money Endgame did.

TheWalkingCuban

But Josh, it’s literally showing signs of slowing down. Like, it has slowed down. Otherwise, it would have passed titanic a while ago. I would say you are correct about your first guess, short of a release, it won’t happen. Having said that, I totally believe that counts. Why? Because why not? All the others had rereleases
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 2/14/2023, 12:19 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - “it won’t happen” meaning, it won’t pass Endgame or Avatar (without rerelease)

But, but, but ... we were told to believe movies will have a difficult time crossing the $1 billion threshold because of new viewing behaviors in a post-pandemic world.
TheHumanSpider2
TheHumanSpider2 - 2/14/2023, 9:23 AM
@GeneralZod - Name 5 movies that crossed that line in the last 3 years.
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 2/14/2023, 11:55 AM
@TheHumanSpider2 - I said "post-pandemic". I will name you 3 movies that crossed the $1 billion threshold in 2022 alone, a post-pandemic year: TopGun2, Jurassic Park, Avatar 2. Even at the very end of 2021, which was the end of the pandemic, NWH scored $1.9 billion, much of that money being collected in Q1 2022. People will continue paying money to physically go to the box office, and spread the word to others to do the same, if the movie is truly enjoyable and worth the effort. Tellingly, no CBM crossed $1 billion in 2022. And we were told it's because of post-pandemic viewing habits. Clearly not true.
