AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER Swims Past STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS To Become 4th Highest-Grossing Movie Ever

We knew it wouldn't be long before Avatar: The Way of Water claimed the No. 4 spot on the biggest movies of all time list when it shot past Avengers: Infinity War last week, and 20th Century Studios has now sent out a press release to make it official.

James Cameron's epic sci-fi sequel has become the fourth highest-grossing film at the global box office, having just surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Way of Water also remains No. 1 at the domestic box office after seven weekends on release, a feat that has not been achieved since the original Avatar hit theaters back in 2009. Additionally, Avatar: The Way of Water is the second-fastest film in history to reach $2 billion (after Avengers: Endgame), and it is now the 11th highest-grossing release of all-time domestically.

The movie shows no signs of slowing down, but will start to face some competition in the coming weeks with the likes of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Shazam! Fury of the Gods on the horizon.

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

Although I watched the Avatar films based solely on the visuals, I can't help but praise the cast. Zoe Saldana is even more amazing in this film than the first. She is really a fantastic actor. Also, Sam Worthington really stepped it up for this film. He's not a bad actor, but. I wasn't impressed with his performance in the first one. He really did a great job here. I think this film deserves every dollar it made. Looking forward to part 3

@WEAPONXOXOXO - me too.

I found the story of Avatar 1 average at best but the visuals and world building were fun. I enjoyed the story of Avatar 2 much more though it's still nothing revolutionary, I still had a good time with it and liked what new elements they introduced and look forward to more.

I used to be very harsh on Avatar 1 because in my opinion there are SOOOOOO many other films that should be the highest grossing film of all time, but it took Avatar 2 to make me kinda realize that "Highest Grossing Film of All Time" isn't the same as "best film ever", just means the movie was such an event it but buts in seats over and over, and you know what... a cool roller coaster ride puts buts in seats over and over. And that's what the Avatar movies provide.

So no, these films aren't high art from a story perspective, but visually and as an experience, Avatar and Avatar 3 very much are high art "experiences".

So my harsh judgment on Avatar has lessened. In fact, I can appreciate the milestones this franchise keeps hitting. Good for it.

I'm looking forward to Avatar 3.

@Godzilla2000Zer - Maybe. I just wonder how he's gonna announce the first few of the movies he's kinda called in his IG as "chapter 1". Just through a thread of tweets? An online video presentation?

The last time WB showed their slate it was during an investors call years ago IIRC so the presentation must have some flare to it.

@NinnesMBC -

I'm betting it's a video with the two DC CEOs behind a great screen announcing the slate.

@AmazingFILMporg - Kevin Smith's special DCEU presentation from 2016 that aired on The CW after, I think, some episodes of Arrow/Flash where he was on a set and was joined by Geoff Johns to break down what was back then the DCEU slate and show concept art was cool. Gunn and Safran should try something like that.

Maybe it'll be like Kevin Feige's presentation of 2020 where we fount Hailee Steinfeld would be Kate Bishop and Iman Vellani was MS. Marvele etc which was in a screen too, so yes maybe it'll be like that.

@Origame - Not discounting it tbh, at least it'll be some hours before that but waiting till the very end of the month where he is just gonna share a "few projects" doesn't add up with the long wait. Unless he wakes up early tomorrow and just, well, tweets it all.

@NinnesMBC - wait, is that an actual member of congress? That is pretty funny.

Don't expect anymore than a line of tweets though.

force awakens was such a nothing movie lol. love or hate tlj (i was whatever on it initially but i've warmed up a little over time), at least it left an impression beyond 2 hours of nostalgia bait.
avatar 2 was solid though.

@tmp3 - The Last Jedi was the best of the three films imo. It's actually one of my favorite Star Wars movies.
