BLADE RUNNER 2099 Enlists SHOGUN's Jonathan Van Tulleken To Direct; Filming Scheduled For April

Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 was first announced back in 2022, and while we have had a few updates since, it's been quite a while since we heard anything concrete about the series.

This led to concern that the project may have been shelved in the midst of the recent Hollywood strikes, but Deadline is now reporting that filming is scheduled to commence this April in Prague after initially setting-up in Belfast, Northern Ireland prior to the strikes.

In addition, Shōgun director Jonathan van Tulleken has been tapped to helm and executive produce the first two episodes. He replaces Jeremy Podeswa, who was originally set to direct before being forced to step away due to a scheduling conflict.

Amazon Studios and Alcon Entertainment are developing the project, with the original sci-fi classic's director, Sir Ridley Scott, on board as as an executive producer. Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) will serve as showrunner.

"The original Blade Runner, directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce Blade Runner 2099 to our global Prime Video customers," Amazon Studios Head of Global Television Vernon Sanders said in a statement back when the show was announced. "We are honored to be able to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors."

Alcon co-CEOs and co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson added, "Audiences first discovered Ridley Scott’s brilliant vision for Blade Runner 40 years ago, and since then, it has become one of the most influential science-fiction films of all time. Denis Villeneuve’s follow-up sequel, Blade Runner 2049, then became one of the best reviewed sequels of all time."

Plot details are still under wraps, but with such a lengthy time-jump between this series and Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049, it's highly unlikely that Harrison Ford will reprise the role of Rick Deckard. Ryan Gosling is a possibility, although his Replicant character appeared to die in the closing moments of the 2017 sequel.

This doesn't mean he couldn't return, of course, but It seems far more likely that the series will introduce a brand-new cast of characters with minor ties to the movies.

I'd like them to ditch the dreary atmosphere and maybe add a bit more humour like those Marvel films.

@DrReedRichards - Yes, this is a comic site for comics, where all the cool people hang out, you have Marvel DC and then the lesser known in-betweens. Blade runner is science fiction for f**king nerds.

@HashTagSwagg -

...and yet here you are, bringing up a different franchise for reasons I can only pretend not to realize. Again, noone brought up the most financially succesful cinematic franchise of all time (or its humor) but you.

@DrReedRichards - It said "What would you like to see from Blade Runner 2099?" this is a comic site so suggesting something comic book related isn't that much of a leap.

Just another franchise now.

One day they will release Citizen Kane 2099.

@ObserverIO - "Just another franchise now" being a franchise in itself is not a problem, making movies just for the sake of it (aka just for money) and losing focus of what make the original special is. 2049 is a fantastic movie in its own right. If they keep the quality level then why not?

@Urubrodi - 2049 was pretty good. Did it have to be a Blade Runner sequel? Would as many people have cared if it wasn't?

@ObserverIO - Blade Runner 2049 could have been equally as amazing a movie even if it had zero connections to the original blade runner.

But…it’s less likely we would have gotten Villeneuve as director, so who knows.

@mountainman - That's probably true. And with him it wouldn't have been what it was.
Urubrodi

@ObserverIO - Yes... being part of the Blade Runner universe is a vital part of that movie, it wouldn't have been the same if you take out of it, it does touch on similar concepts as the first one but with another spin

@ObserverIO - But in any case your argument actually helps mine, being part of franchise doesn't mean that needs to be a slave to it, each movie can still have its own identity.

Brilliant, genre shifting original. Beautifully shot but ultimately soulless sequel. No interest in a TV series that just tries to leverage the title.

I would have preferred a movie but I’ll check this out. Shogun is definitely something I’ll be watching. And I’m counting the days for Dune.

Well that's a promising sign, Shōgun is meant to be like Game Of Thrones, which sounds awesome.

I have been a fan of the series, since it was written by Philip Dick, well before Blade Runner came out. There were a number of sequels written by other authors after the popularity of Blade Runner took off. I would like to see some of those storylines included or embellished on. it would be nice to see an origin story of the replicants as a flashback to see why they’re so feared, and to show a little more sympathy for their plight.
