Blu-Ray Avatar Sales Out Do The Dark Knight!

Can you believe it?

James Cameron's 'Avatar' has set a 1st day sales record in the US beating top notch big dog (and rightfully so) 'The Dark Knight'!

Fox sold 1.5 million units in the USA and Canada alone according to Deadline Hollywood. The tally for 'The Dark Knight' Blu-Ray sales was 600K. Avatar smoked the Batman!

Nikki Finke is complaining that Fox did not send out a press release copy. Nikki, mines in the mail darling, you are more than welcome to come on over and view 'Avatar' with Jman and Johhny:P

Off course this release of Avatar is the 2-D bare bones version, with a beefed up version being released later in 2010 and the 3-D version hitting shelves sometime next year. Were some of you ComicBookMovie fans to credit for the Blu-Ray release of Avatar being successful?

I got the Blu Ray & DVD combo pack for 20 bucks. I was pretty mad though that there was no special features, no 3D or anything else a movie of this caliber should come with. Although I do have to say it is the most visually stunning Blu Ray I have ever seen.

ngu13 - The 3D version was amazing. You can almost feel that you're there. After seeing it on 3D I went and accompanied a friend to watch it in 2D and it was a let down. I mean, suddenly the story ,visuals, and everything doesn't seem all all that great anymore.

watching in 3d I was thinking it was definitely Oscar worthy and all but in 2d I was like ... this is a strong contender for best picture? *WTF?!?*

This movie was an overrated, unoriginal, cliche storyline. It was a CGI Pocahontas. My husband and I won't buy it because we will never watch the movie again. Not worth a second viewing. Also we didn't get the hype over the effects. Nothing amazing to us. lol.

doesnt surprise me... has more mass appeal than dark knight. it was 'safer' than TDK was and more kid friendly and less disturbing.

TDK had Characters that were already estabilshed, a plot that already existed and it took less time to make, AND IT WAS TILL MORE ORIGINAL THAN AVITAR!!! i wont be buying it.

I bought the Blu-ray DVD combo pack. While I didn't think it was the best movie, the special effects were incredible. I felt it is the beginning of a new age in movie-making, good or bad ... we'll see.

Ha! " I would love to see any of you who diss this flick come up with something better. Don't. Think. You. Could."

Thats completely irrelevant, the detractors(and i'm not one of them, I loved it) don't have to come up with something better, they just have to reference another film maker that has. See how it works?

why? what is the point of watching this movie at home? to me this movie is like a Broadway show. it's something you should go see, once, in a theater, in 3D, then be done with it. we all know how original the story is (wolves, smurfs, fern gully, Pocahontas it's all be said) so i'm not sure what you get upon a second watch of this movie. i couldn't care less about records, it'll be broken soon, probably by Thor, then that'll be broken by avengers, which will subsequently be broken by avatar 2 and the cycle will continue. im just saying i don't get the hype.

@TheGuillotine was right, it is a brand new age of film making, but i hate that this is the movie that ushered it in. i don't think it deserved it.

I wont buy it until it's released in 3D because even though I'm sure it would still look pretty nice in HD, without those effects it's a pretty average movie IMO.
Faust1973
Faust1973 - 4/23/2010, 10:24 AM
...I haven't seen it yet either in the theater OR on DVD and would probably just rent it from Redbox just to watch it and see what's what...but my take on a movie, or a story is this...if you need a lot of flash and effects to make the movie good, then it's not a good movie to begin with...I'll illustrate...does it matter if you see Godfather in 3-D, 4-D, or whatever D? No, because it's a well made, well written movie, enjoyable and engaging...on the other side of the coin you have a movie like Iron Man that has a lot of effects...but the effects are BACKGROUND...the story is still sound...it's like what comic books did back in the '90's...they started putting them on the new smooth paper and creating the flashy covers to sell the books...and people bought them...because they WERE flashy...but the stories were shit...movie makers need to get out of this lazy habit, come up with well put together story lines, THEN figure out how to do the effects...perfect example being Iron Man...

hey scambune, you want me to come up with a better movie, just name a Disney movie you want me to change the title and names of the characters. just like Lord Cameron did.

I also love that the caption above the title is "From the director of the Titanic"...like that's a selling point...biggest waste of 3 and a half hours I even spent...only reason I went cause I was with the wife...and even then I think I got up 6 or 7 times...and fell asleep at one point...at the end, I wanted someone to push the old lady into the ocean..."There, go get your damn necklace."

@ scambune

have you never seen a movie, heard a song, or played a video game that you didn't like?? of course you have. have you ever made a movie, song, or video game? DON'T. THINK. YOU. HAVE. by your logic, you're not allowed to dislike any of those things unless you yourself have made something better.

they're called opinions. everyone has them. i had no desire to see this, but because of the hype, i did. and i was disappointed. so sue me.

and also before i get accused of not liking or seeing this movie, i did see it and i thought the visuals were fantastic and that it was well done, its just don't put out a story that has been told over and over again and clam it is new idea. and its not just Pocahantas the story goes back to the first time one culture had something that another one wanted and chose to wipe the other one out. we get it people are greedy and dont have foresight enough to see how one choice can effect the grater good.

LEE: Just because it's sold more copies than The Dark Knight doesnt make it a better movie! :P Sure, the 3D was [frick]ing amazing but take that away and what are you left with? You're most definitely not left with the amazing writing, acting and direction that TDK had!
