This may come as a little bit of a surprise for some, specially because everyone was expecting Gareth Edwards's Godzilla opening weekend to be around $70 million, but after last night's strong midnight showings, $9.3 million, Godzilla might end up having the biggest opening of the year so far.

Godzilla fared better in Thursday midnight screenings than The Amazing Spider Man 2, which opened with $8.7 million, but a little bit under Captain America: The Winter Soldier's $10.2 million. Although many projections are being pretty conservative, stating that it will open north of $70 million, if it continues performing like this through out the weekend, specially after expanding to 4,000 domestic locations today, it could open upwards $100 million.

What do you guys think? Will the film perform better than expected and hit the century mark? Will it just roar to an impressive $70+ million opening? Leave your thoughts down bellow and thanks for reading.

It was a good film (7/10 for me), but I expected more than just glimpses of the monsters and the fights. The ending was great.

Just came back from watching it, gonna watch it again tomorrow on IMAX (if I can). More of a human drama rather than the Pacific Rim type of film.

Was a good movie but the cinema here absolutely butchered it. I mean, the overall volume of the film was way too silent. I remember watching the latest 3D trailer in another cinema a few weeks ago and the Godzilla scream had my seat vibrating and my ears bleeding. No such moment during the screening last night and you had to concentrate in order to understand some of the actors at times when people around you started whispering. Way to [frick] up a movie, Cineplex...

just saw it today. AMAZING. AND also saw the intersteller trailer. HOLY SHIT. Thats what i want from a trailer. PERFECT. it felt like the complete opposite of an amazing spiderman 2 trailer where everything was given away. here you want more but they give you the right amount.

Also, I may have gone to see Godzilla just for the interstellar trailer.

@ShiaLabeouf

You think that 90s Godzilla movie was better than this? You are entitled to your opinion...

Epic!

I preferred the focus on human life around the monstrous events...I know some reviews have viewed this as a negative....I thought it actually gave the movie more depth rather than a brainless 2hr smash up...

Plus when the monsters/fights were on screen....wow....and that ending!!!!!!!

Movie was great! 9/10 for me. Final fight was awesome, some great trademark Godzilla moves. My only issues were his roar wasnt room shaking (i saw it on IMAX) and his atomic breath wasn't as powerful as the Japanese version. I like the 2 mothera Easter eggs too

@Doopie - What an incredibly bizarre post. How is the movie bad for you "on a personal level"? If you don't like it, don't watch it. It shouldn't cause you any physical discomfort. Those are probably gas pains.

Film should have been called Humans for all the lack of Godzilla that was in it. I just came back from the first showing and it was packed with hardcore fans. Let me tell you, you could feel the disappointment and frustration with all the cutting away as soon as Godzilla and that muto started to fight coupled with all the waiting, and waiting... AND WAITING while they showed us humans doing things. This wasn't necessarily a bad film, but it wasn't really that good, either. I enjoyed Pacific Rim more than this. At least that had good music and a lot of fighting.

@Luminus the only disappointment I felt in my theater was that there was no after the credits scene, and everyone stayed expecting one. Someone yelled out, "C'mon! Where's the vs. King Kong!" Haha hilarious.

But everyone has their own tastes. I grew up watching old monster/sci fi movies where you never saw much of the monsters until the last 15-20 min. This was an homage to the classics and an excellent nod to the original Gojira movies. Must see it again.

^I had more fun watching Godzilla vs. King Kong and that's saying something.

Luminus - 5/16/2014, 12:33 PM
That fight at the end, although the best part of the movie, wasn't epic enough to justify all the waiting. I grew up on the old films and they ALWAYS justified the waiting. Always.

And the music during those epic scenes were incredibly memorable. I have the soundtracks. That's how good they are.
