BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Crosses $200M Overseas Mark Following Huge Opening In China

Despite a mild $92M gross in North America, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has proven to be successful overseas after a record-breaking $45M opening in China that pushed the sci-fi epic's international gross past $200M.

Since its domestic opening last month, Pacific Rim hasn't exactly been a smash hit. While not a box office bomb on par with The Lone Ranger and R.I.P.D., the Gullermo del Toro-directed sci-fi film was initially viewed as a disappointment after a $37.3M debut. The $200M movie has currently grossed $92.3M in North America, making a sequel questionable. Now, Pacific Rim has opened at #1 in China, where it scored an excellent $45.2M gross. This is the highest Chinese opening of all time for a Warner Bros. movie (surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, which opened to $32M last year), and the sixth largest debut of any Hollywood production. It also pushed the film's international earnings to $200.4M and worldwide gross to $293.4M. While this is obviously a good start, it's still unclear whether or not the film will make enough to cover its large budget and/or marketing costs. Do you want to see a sequel to Pacific Rim?

That's $45M that neither Legendary or WB will ever see.

WB barely spent any money marketing the movie, so I doubt the budget for that was too high.

USA market is becoming smaller each year.

Maybe movies have been struggling to reach 200m or even 100m on USA, so...

Movie Studios: put more money on the international market and f**** USA.

Legendary did finance 75% of PACIFIC RIM but the franchise is under WB!

Legendary can't make a sequel to PR with Universal!

It's a WB property!

& as they just put 25% into PR; making a Sequel can help as they didn't lose much!
As a sequel with MUCH MUCH better marketing can be a smash hit & bring profits!
This is a realistic statement not a fan boy dream-scream like SpiderMan should be at Marvel & in Avengers blah blah blah!

I enjoyed Pacific Rim, wouldn't mind a sequel same as I wouldn't mind a Dredd sequel, we shall see if either happens.

I'd choose watching Wrestling over Pacific Rim though!

Pacific Rim was alright. I want a Neon Genesis Evangelion film. Just call it Neon Genesis or Evangelion though, the title I think would put a lot of casual movie goers off.
