BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Crosses $200M Overseas Mark Following Huge Opening In China
Despite a mild $92M gross in North America, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim has proven to be successful overseas after a record-breaking $45M opening in China that pushed the sci-fi epic's international gross past $200M.
Since its domestic opening last month, Pacific Rim hasn't exactly been a smash hit. While not a box office bomb on par with The Lone Ranger and R.I.P.D., the Gullermo del Toro-directed sci-fi film was initially viewed as a disappointment after a $37.3M debut. The $200M movie has currently grossed $92.3M in North America, making a sequel questionable. Now, Pacific Rim has opened at #1 in China, where it scored an excellent $45.2M gross. This is the highest Chinese opening of all time for a Warner Bros. movie (surpassing The Dark Knight Rises, which opened to $32M last year), and the sixth largest debut of any Hollywood production. It also pushed the film's international earnings to $200.4M and worldwide gross to $293.4M. While this is obviously a good start, it's still unclear whether or not the film will make enough to cover its large budget and/or marketing costs. Do you want to see a sequel to Pacific Rim?
