BOX OFFICE: PACIFIC RIM Looks Set To Finish Opening Weekend With Third Place

Despite the fact that it at one point looked as if the Guillermo del Toro helmed movie would steal the top spot, the latest figures seem to indicate that Pacific Rim won't even come close to #2 as Despicable Me 2 and Grown Ups compete for #1 at the North American box office.

While it looked set to be a very tight race indeed, it now appears as if Despicable Me 2 will be #1 again this weekend with around $45 million. Shockingly, Grown Ups 2 isn't too far behind with a predicted $43.8 million, as Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim will take #3 with only $39.7 million. It no longer appears as if the latter two will be battling it out for second place as the ensemble comedy and 3D animated movie will be both vying for #1. On Friday, it appeared as if the race for the top spot was neck and neck, but even an 'A-' CinemaScore doesn't seem to have been too much of a help. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are banking on the monster vs. robot mash up performing better overseas, and as Deadline points out: "Pacific Rim continued to dominate Russia’s market at #1 with a 3-day cume of $4.1M. Korea had another great day with cume now $3.1M after 2 days, ranking #1 and taking 45% of the Top Five. Mexico started with $1.3M, and UK opening day was $1M ranking 2nd behind the other opener Monsters University. Australia’s cume is now $1.2M but only #4 for two straight days during the school holidays which is baffling, Italy is $585K, and New Zealand $221K." Did you guys decide to check out Pacific Rim during this bloated weekend at the box office?

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Saw the movie. Exceeded my expectations. This may be considered spoilerish so don't read beyond this sentence if you don't want me to spoil anything for you. Anyway, you see Gipsy Danger stomping through the streets of Hong Kong before he gets ambushed by Otachi. The camera pans to its feet, where we see a bridge is impeding his progress. You're conditioned by all these other movies to think he's going to plow right through it, because [frick] collateral damage, but no, he gingerly steps over it. I thought it was a nice touch. It's sad when a giant robot has more consideration for his environment than THE Superman. Now before any MOS fans flame me, don't worry, I'm just pushing your buttons. ;)

End of spoiler. All in all, at least Grown Ups 2 didn't get number 1. All's well in the world.

Really though all this said does this movie need a sequel? seemed like they wrapped it up with a bow at the end. I mean I'm all for a second movie but at the end of the day I'm happy it didn't end with a cliffhanger and is a great stand alone movie

movies like grown ups 2 will do nothing overseas. the only place where you get such nonsensical numbers is domestically and this is due to women and children. I know over 63% of the audience for despicable me was female. Im betting a similar number for Grown ups while im betting a high proportion of the audience that saw Pacific rim is male. Im sorry guys but women in the states frick up the box office.

Complete [frick]ing bullshit. I went to the IMAX 3D screening. BLEW MY [frick]ING MIND.
I dont get Americans. You'd rather go see a crapass sequel to a piece of shit movie?

Pacific Rim was all my childhood hopes brought to life. From the opening fight scene all the way to the final stand, I was on edge. Del Toro did an AMAZING job of bringing the emotion to life and making me feel. Watching Cherno & Crimson fight Kaiju Otachi, EPIC feels. Watching Stacker climb out of Coyote, beautiful. WATCHING Gipsy turn a Kaiju into sushi, twice! come on people! This DESERVES a sequel.

Grown Ups in other countries as Mexico will earn about 1000 dollars, no way can be a smash hit, Pacific Rim will be the second of this month, because is pointless compete against Despicabe Me 2, I have to admit it.

wow... so all of America isn't a bunch of CBM fanboys. Who'da ever thunk it? Not everyone wants to flock to see something called "Pacific Rim." What does that title even mean, anyway? Is it about a tire shop on the West Coast? Who knows?

We've already had IM3 & MoS with all its destruction porn... now do people really feel like they need to go to see a CGI battle fest, especially one with characters and a situation that's totally unfamiliar to virtually everyone?

It's not a surprise at all.
