Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson star in this Euro production directed by Luc Besson. Lucy (Johansson) who falls prey to sinister underworld forces, gains superhuman abilities that allow her to strike back at her oppressors by using the full potential of her brain. Let’s get started right away.
When you watch the movie, you quickly begin to realize that you don’t know what is coming next. You don’t know where the story is going as you watch it, and the turns it takes are pleasant. What I expected to see was a film where it’s Lucy against the bad guys while she does all kinds of wire-fu, and fight terribly choreographed fight scenes. What I got was a smartly written, beautifully shot film, that took a chance on being different, and paid off. You’ll see some out of place scenes that pop in from time to time, that actually end up making a lot of sense and add to the artistic flair of the film.
Johansson nails the character and shows some range as she progresses through her transformation. I left the theater thinking she could definitely be a terminator if she’s ever asked to do it. Not to mention its just a joy to watch her on screen, there is just something about her, that I’m sure at some point will fade away the more movies she’s in, but for now, she’s quite enjoyable to watch.
Morgan Freeman I feel plays the same person in every movie he’s in lately. However that is not a bad thing. He’s just that guy that says things that make sense (not really) but his tone and the way he speaks makes it all seem true :-). He fits very well in Lucy, and adds that sense of calm he adds to everything else he plays in.
Lucy runs at a very efficient 90 minutes and really uses every minute to its advantage. There is no bloat to be had here. The story is enjoyable and really in a way can inspire you to be your best. Even though you won’t be controlling matter or energy waves with your mind and time soon, it still makes you think in your mind, what can you do with just a little more effort. Maybe that’s just me, but I felt it was a fresh experience and one I’d recommend.
The base of the story is pretty contrived, and one that you’ve heard a million times over about humans only using 10% of their brain etc. It’s just something that isn’t very original, but that doesn’t exactly hamper down the film. Of course, there are plot holes and unexplained things but, again that doesn’t kill it. Many movies suffer from the same issues. Moving on!
THE VERDICT
If you want a quick, eanjoyable, and action packed experience, Lucy is definitely worth your time. Luc Besson brought something interesting and thought provoking to the table. Thanks for reading this Lucy review and remember.. Stay Dorky!
