Speaking with The Playlist while promoting the horror film Mama (which he's producing), Guillermo del Toro discusses some of his upcoming projects, including a planned sequel to his sci-fi film Pacific Rim which is coming this summer. It was recently announced that del Toro will be co-writing the sequel's script with Travis Beacham, though he isn't definitely set to direct. However, he's interested in filming in 3D if he does sign on to take the helm again. "Yes. Provided, at that point, that the technology is becoming easier and easier…" He then comments on his initial lack of interest in converting Pacific Rim to 3D, despite the studio's insistence. "Even then they were super respectful. By then we were already getting ILM shots. I was realizing that out of 100 shots, maybe 10% of the shots were risky. They said, "If we go 2D on those shots, we can do it." Then I gave them my list of conditions. They spent twice of what they normally spend on [this process], because they gave me the chance to pay ILM to do every single shot in native 3D. They aren't being converted. So all the big 3D effects shots are being done by ILM from the get go. Normally they give a movie a 14 to 16 week conversion time [for 3D]. I started the conversion back in September. So it's six months for conversion. It's very classy."

Last year, it was reported that del Toro had signed on to direct and produce Warner Bros.' live action Beauty & The Beast adaptation, which has Harry Potter star Emma Watson attached to star. Since then, however, we haven't heard anything official on the project. Here, GDT confirms that a script has been finished, and will be turned in to the studio soon. "We just got the first draft from Andrew Davies, who wrote some BBC Charles Dickens miniseries, to great effect, including two of my favorites of his – "Little Dorritt" and "Bleak House." I love his work. So we just got it. I'm doing a pass myself and then we'll send it to the studio for reactions." Guillermo del Toro's next film, Pacific Rim, hits theaters July 12th this year. He will next film Legendary Pictures' Crimson Peak early next year.

Pacific Rim 2??!
We haven't even got the first one yet. That's just greedy on Pacific Rim's part.
Screw this noise.

Long as they don't make beauty and the beast into some Alice in wonderland battle, like they did with Snow White too,and the best actually has to be a beast, not some guy in tiger make up lol

Most overrated director out there. How many C- level "haunted house" projects are we supposed to swallow?

I agree with teinen, blade 2 was the only thing I've ever liked that has his name on it. Mimic, now that was a film :)

Del Toro is one of the only true auteurs left in Hollywood. He's a true artist. Like DeVinci, but with Moving Pictures. He's got more integrity than anybody and he's smarter, more cultured and most importantly honest and humble and not pretentious. His films, themselves are just flat-out fun and you can see how they'd be far too subtle to those that don't look too deep and aren't the types that might study the details. Okay so he's making cheesy, action-packed monster movies with guys in rubber suits. But they're so well done, it's ubelievable. Just take Hellboy, for an example. That film is absolutely perfect. So absolutely perfect.
Really, I know he's got a lot of fans, but if anything, this guy is underrated. And he's just getting started.
And it's quite an achievenment to have a fanbase, when you're making movies as diverse as Devil's Backbone and Pacific Rim.

Kamen@ Hell yeah. I love that guy with the Cathedral for a head. "That guy with a cathedral for a head", I can see how that doesn't exactly sound like high art. But it so is.

Beauty and the Beast movie would be awesome.

But i think Del Toro should stay just Producer. He should get someone else to direct it so he can focus on At the Mountains of Madness or Dark Universe.

Jean Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro or Alfonso Cuaron would be great choice for Beauty and the Beast.

Or Tom Hooper. The guy behind The Kings Speech and Les Miserables. That dude creates some cool looking movies.

AlexDeLarge@ Good choices. If only Jeunet&Caro would work together again. Not keen on Tom Hooper, though. I think the King's Speech worked because of the chemistry between the two leads and Les Mis works because it's Les Mis. I find him a bit lacking, personally.

I think he's one of the greatest directors of our time. I was so sad when he left The Hobbit. Let's hope Pacific Rim is worth it.
