I haven't been paying attention to this much but... I'm not really interested.

I'm not saying it's going to be a bad movie or anything like that, but I just don't get excited about Christopher Nolan movies. They are always good-to-great but flawed. Like a beautiful steak smothered in an obnoxious cranberry and mango sauce...

@MantiniumMan

I think you just proved my point. Blockbusters are great and thoughtful movies are great, but trying to make both into one creates movies that are too dumb to be thoughtful and too dense to be base entertaining.

The philosophically interesting stuff about Inception (the vastness of the subconscious mind/logistics of shared dreaming) couldn't ever be properly explored because they had to get on with the running-jumping-shooting, and the fun stuff about Inception (the "idea heist") got dragged down into a boring malaise of dream mechanics.

Nolan is unquestionably ambitious (which wins tons of points from me), and he's one of the best writers of dialogue in Hollywood, but he gets himself tied up into knots of narrative that he can't properly navigate.

Don't try to make this an argument because I have blasphemed against St. Christopher or something. I said it will probably be a good movie, like most of his movies are, but in general they are not smart enough to be smart and not fun enough to be fun.

I answered your first question before you deleted it. You said something to the effect of "who does better thinker blockbusters". Thus my answer.

Let me quickly amend that.

"...they are not smart enough to be all that smart and not fun enough to be all that fun."

I enjoy parts of all of his movies, but the wholes are always somehow disappointing.

The most thought provoking film of the year.

Its a shame that in reality we have all but abandoned space exploration.
Like seriously we only managed to put a man on the moon and that was in 1969, its 2014 and we haven't gone any further......the moon isn't even a planet its just a rock in our orbit.

@Marfooio

I feel like you're minimizing the effort and investment required for manned space travel, ignoring the progress that has been made in the past 45 years in terms of man's space presence, minimizing the value of unmanned space travel, and relegating the Moon (which is more like a part of a "dual-planet" with Earth than it is "just a rock in our orbit").

The space program should certainly be funded more, but the and discoveries and advances we continue to make on the ground are the kinds of things that will allow us to do more in space than just plant flags when we finally do go.

We should start colonizing space now! Let's launch Donald Trump into deep space to get things started!!

More than directors, I get excited by concepts/premises I've never seen before or unique approaches to established genres. Without hearing the premise of the film first, I'm not sure there is any director that would sell me on a movie just by their very presence on the title screen. Maybe Aronofsky or Jonze, but even then, I didn't bother seeing Noah.

If you'd asked me for names 10 years ago, I might have said Guy Ritchie, 15 years ago, I might have said Tarantino. But once I figure out the pattern/idiosyncrasies/personal hangups of a director, I tend to lose the spark of excitement in their work in abstract.

Jaded isn't the right word. It's just that once I get a good understanding of someone's psychology, they cease to surprise (and therefore interest) me. I was fairly excited for Inception, but (while it was an okay movie) it confirmed pretty much everything I already knew about Nolan, and the mental model I had of him.

I think the difference here is more in the use of the word "excited". As far as movies go, I don't get your kind of excited very often.

This emphasis on his family feels contrived. Like the girlfriend in Armageddon.

blackandyellow: I agree with you on Scorsese being better than Nolan. Especially, Scorsese's early work. Eastwood has directed some incredible films as well. I have never seen any of Affleck's directorial work. I for one miss Stanley Kubrick. I would've loved to have seen A.I. if he lived to direct it. Spielberg trying to imitate/emulate Kubrick just wasn't the same.

SpockOClock: have you ever seen Memento, Insomnia or The Prestige? Inception and the Batman Trilogy pale in comparison to these Nolan films. Nolan has great talent. I just feel he is better at the "non-blockbuster" type of film.

As far as Inception being so wonderful goes, if you want to see a great movie that deals with dreams/reality, watch Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. A much better and more thought-provoking movie than Inception.
