Is James Cameron's "Avatar" Destined to Fail?

"Avatar" is over a month away from being in Theaters and the buzz is already negative. Rumor is that the "Avatar" budget is over $500 million. With a budget so huge can it possibly make a profit?

Fox does not seemed worried however. I don't know how they are not. James Cameron's brilliant opus "Avatar" is set to unleash the next link in movie making on audiences December 18th 2009. But with a budget of over $500 million already can the movie make a profit?

Fox thinks they have an ace in the hole with Cameron. Since Titanic did well Fox thinks that will be enough of a force to drive audiences in the theater to see "Avatar" just because Cameron is directing. That logic confuses me. Hey Fox, ask The Wakowski Brothers if you can be successful making one movie and not the other (The Matrix vs Speed Racer) and I bet their answer will entertain you.

The other back up Cameron is thinking he will have if "Avatar" bombs is that he will be able to sell his new 3D tech to other studios. The answer to that is maybe. If Lucasfilm does not under sell you for almost the same quality of technology. There seems to me to be to many "if's" already a month before the "Avatar" release.

Since I plan on seeing it, I hope it is good. I want to be the first one back to write a review. That's my pleasure! Not that anyone will be able to see it amongst thousands of Sorathekey "previews".

It has to be good, just look at how many successes it riped off from!!! Now THAT'S truly a "revolutionnary" concept ;P

Hhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyyydeeeeeehoooooooo!!!! This is my son James Cameron, he is the revolutionary mind behind "Avatar"!!!

I certainly hope that avatar will be a good film. The action looks cool, and the plot seems interesting enough (although it's been used before), but it's not enough to make me as interested as i should be. If the reviews are good enough, I'll definitely see it in IMAX (for the first time). Here's hoping

IVE SEE THE TRAILERS, IT DOES LOOK GEORGEOUS. WHEN I SEE IT IN ITS ENTIRETY I'LL GIVE AN HONEST OPINION...THIS GUY INTRODUCED THE WORLD TO CGI...SO I WILL NOT KNOCK HIM , I WANNA SEE WHAT HE'S DONE...TITANIC STILL NUMBER ONE, TRAILED BY THE DARKNIGHT, AND NOTE THAT TICKETS ARE WAY HIGHER THAN BACK WHEN TITANIC CAME OUT..

I hope its great! I love sci fi, and for the most part i love Cameron movies..it just doesn't look that good. And Im far from the only person that thinks so..but, in a world where Transformers 2 makes so much, I seriously doubt Avatar will have much trouble..even if it is a pile of shite!

Nice article attempt, but I think you're just stirring the pot?! I said it before, bad opinions, poor reasoning, and a $1.90 can get a mocha latte and nothing else.. Only an idiot would not see this movie on Fox's unaccomplished success and judge basically on that. I know everybody is going to see it on CBM, so why not the rest of the nation Jman. Only one that I'm puzzled by is Tylers review of it, and says he'll see it, but gave it a "meh" opinion. One by one will go and give their reviews and changing the opinions on Avatar. If it tanks? So, Blade Runner did and look where it's now.. ;) And for the record I don't believe Camerons success or failure is riding on this movie..

Oh.. And Teabag, please no "out of left field" references from you, hopefully you'll have some debate..

Tauro your not making any sense. "bad opinions"???.."poor reasoning", the movie isn't out yet! You assuming its going to be good is the same as assuming its going to be bad. Im saying it doesn't look that good to me..your saying ITS GOING to be good. Who's the one being unreasonable?

I might see it. I wasn't interested until i saw the last trailer. But Titanic was how many years ago? Come one fox!
Velox
Velox - 11/9/2009, 10:19 AM
I'm hoping that the footage I saw will look better in 3D. It's possible that since that's what it was directed and designed for that it doesn't translate well.

I hope it IS good, because in general I like Cameron's work and find it very entertaining. Even his bad stuff is pretty good...just hoping that this is one of those things that grabs the public by the balls and starts up a good word-of-mouth campaign.
Shaman
Shaman - 11/9/2009, 10:28 AM
Yes, mark my words, people WILL change their minds like they did with Drangonball and Legend of Chun Li!!! :))

But it "might" be a good film, it's just that they did such a bang up job of overhyping their Smurf Gully concept that it just no longer appeals to me. HOLY SHIT!!! That's 10$!!! 10$ down the drain before the movie is even out in theaters... how on earth will they get passed their 500 million budget??? They'll need a death... yeah, Cameron's gonna have ta kill Worthington to get any profit.

Since Jensen Ackles will be cast as Captain America, Whispery Worthington lost all will to live anyway...

Horse sex is kewl... But Emma Watson would have been a cooler pic ;P
Minotauro
Minotauro - 11/9/2009, 10:29 AM
@Ror that sums up most of yalls opinions.. you all want to like it, and on the other hand just trust your own gut and say "oh, might be shit".. I ain't assuming nothing Ror, just responding to the article... if anything, you think I'm talking about the movie but, I'm talking about the trailers and footage that have been past released.. anything else buddy... ;|
Minotauro
Minotauro - 11/9/2009, 10:32 AM
I don't think the Furn Gully concept was anything they where trying to sell.. Only thing that caught my attention was all the "Next-Gen" talk about the 3D concept of it.. And the fact that he hasn't directed a feature in 12 years.. So,

Kevens back :D!
Lets just see how this movie is gonna do. In most country's James Cameron isn't that well known, so people won't go to the movie because of Titanic. People will go because of good marketing. Thats the stuff that gets people into theaters.
I for one think this movie is gonna be great, who knows maybe a classic.

lets see a romantic love story movie with leonardo dicraprio, vs an action based sci-fi with sam worthington? to assume that they would both make the same amount of money is ludicrous. they appeal to completely different audiences. i dont see as many old ladies going to this one. $500 million is alot to make back. its possible but tough. ror has a good point with the transformers comparison. the higher ticket prices for 3-D and imax will certainly help. so who knows.

Anybody watch the movie, Battle for Terra? I just watched it last night and some of the plot points are similar to Avatar. It came out in 2007. Humans messed up their planet so they search out for a new one to take. Battle ensues and some more stuff.
ASSASSIN666
ASSASSIN666 - 11/9/2009, 10:59 AM
I don't see this movie doing great numbers at all. Much like the music industry if your away too long after a string of hits people will forget about you and move on. Cameron has taken too damn long with this movie and all his going back to Titanic bullshit. While I'm sure that his technology will be relevant I'm not to sure about him, or his movie. This movie is very wait and see, and a huge financial and artistic gamble for such a talented guy. I'll see it even though I still dislike Worthington being shoved up my ass, and down my throat at the same time
FlashThompson
FlashThompson - 11/9/2009, 11:06 AM
Yeah I think there are a lot of derivatives in this movie especially since it's coming close to the time on the Mayan calender of the impending Apocolypse. A lot of the movies that will be coming out will have a pretty heavy overtone of the end of the world. And the producers of 2012 can just come to my house and rock me to sleep at night after watching the trailer for that. I mean Jesus.....
Shaman
Shaman - 11/9/2009, 11:12 AM
I wanna see Emma Watson naked in 3D...

LEEE- Of course Jensen Ackles is [frick]ing Hawkeye... Hawkeye's always been Cap's bitch, it's only fitting that Jensen Ackles, a.k.a. Captain America, has his way every now and then with ol' Barton ;P

thats the dumbest way of thinking i've ever heard. titanic and avatar are two COMPLETELY different kinds of movies. i doubt this will bring the crowd titanic did just because its directed by cameron. lol, thats actually funny
TheGuillotine
TheGuillotine - 11/9/2009, 11:29 AM
If they actually want this film to earn money they may want to start advertising it. I'm betting 85-90% of the world hasn't even heard of this movie yet.
thwhtGuardian
thwhtGuardian - 11/9/2009, 11:41 AM
yeah...romantic movie v. sci fi...historically speaking romance sells better, you can't compare this to titanic. I'm not saying it's good or bad, personally I'm interested in seeing it. But to say that it's going to do that well is ludicrous, when you change genres you can't make comparisons in sales. Steven king does great horror, he always sells well, but if he were to write a dime store romance novel would it do as well? Who knows. We'll wait and see how it does, a 500 mil budget is certainly a formidable foe. I don't care who the director is, or if it's the sequel to the most profitable franchise of all time, 500 mil is a big gamble.
