The original story about a group of scientists who are reduced to microscopic size and injected via ship into the body of an ill colleague is taking on a new dimension in the version now in active development for 20th Century Fox. As first reported by Deadline Cameron, busy with two sequels to Avatar among other projects, does not plan to direct and Shawn Levy (Real Steel) is attached as the helmer.

“I gave him my idea about how this should be turned into a love story and he’s really run with it,” says Cameron who noted that the script (originally written by Shane Salerno) with its complex premise has to be just right before it can get to the production level. Cameron says it’s about two thirds of the way there so far in the development process. Much like Titanic the new Voyage has a real emotional core to it, basically dealing with a doctor going through troubled times in his marriage who finds himself injected into his gravely ill wife in order to save her life. Apparently once he gets to the brain things really heat up.Compared to the original the possiblities of this re-imagination are quite intriguing. And of course with the massive advances in filmmaking technology in the 45 years since Richard Fleischer’s version, Fantastic Voyage is truly ripe for a reboot.

A few weeks ago Levy told me he’s working hard on it and does seem genuinely excited to get this in front of the cameras at some point but it isn’t necessarily his next project.

And who will star in this movie? Over six months ago Will Smith's name had been floated around. Stories had circulated that Levy would make this his next project if he could get Smith to sign on, but apparently who took a pass. Also rumored is that Levy won't make the film unless he has an A level star in the lead. In addition, James Cameron was pushing Levy to look a lesser named stars like he did with Avatar.

The last name attached to the film was Hugh Jackman who recently made Real Steel with Levy, and that has had success based on the modest budget Levy had to work with. However, no name is currently signed on for the project. By the way I think Levy is a good choice for the project, and I think he could give it tone like Dennis Quaid's Innerspace. Another great movie about miniaturizing a human being, that also starred the hilarious Martin Short.

I can only see Cameron doing this film and actually making it better than the original.

Hey why not. The formula's worked so far.
Avatar & Titanic are what, like # 1 and 2 all time box office grosser's. The stories in both films are similar enough: Two people fall in love amid a major upheaval of some kind.

Eh, not surprised if James Cameron went the "love story" route. That's practically his true profession, creating an epic revolving around two lovers. Ex; Terminator 1, True Lies, Titanic, Avatar etc. But love his work nonetheless.

What do you mean "better than the original"? It had Raquel Welch! Anything with her is good, cheap fun.

So...the love story is the plot with science fiction as an attention grabber? I am not so confident about this.

@FlixMentallo- Raquel Welch represented the best two reasons to watch a number of movies.

What, Cameron can't stick to making original peices of shit like Avatar, now he has to rape classics, turning them into Cameron-ised crap as well? This guy was once a legend and now he's a joke who needs to stay away from remakes. His original shit is bad enough.

No love storys.............. Just keep it like the old version, random experiment accidently injected to a nobody because that was one of the best things about it.

@ patrickbateman7

cameron's movies have always had an emotional core hidden beneath all the action

T1 - love story
Aliens - mother dealing with the loss of her child befriends another child
T2 - boy with no father connects to soulless robot
true lies - love story

if you think cameron is a faggot now then he's always been a faggot

Yeah spiderneil,

That hidden (or not so hidden) emotional core is one of the reasons Cameron's films resonate with so many people.

I for one certainly can identify with injection into my wife. ;-)

Here's a piece of advice, from the mouth of one Jay Sherman: If the movie stinks, just don't go.

To further elaborate, and I quote:
"I am a movie critic by trade, and until recently, I was paid to tell you people which movies merely stink and which ones you shouldn't screen near an open flame. Well, I am putting the burden of lousy movies back on YOU. It's very simple: if you stop GOING to bad movies, they'll stop MAKING bad movies. If the movie used to be a tv show, just don't go. After roman numeral two, give it a rest. If it's a remake of a classic, RENT THE CLASSIC. [Ten or so minutes later, when his voice is about to give out.] Tell them you want stories about PEOPLE, not a hundred million dollars of stunts and explosions. People, it's up to you--if the movie stinks, JUST-DON'T-GO!"
