Recently, Bryce Dallas Howard has been doing the rounds to hype up the home entertainment release of Jurassic World Dominion, though Universal Pictures might be regretting that decision based on these comments! We're ecstatic to see the actress speak her mind, though, particularly as she's put the spotlight on some long-standing problems in Hollywood.
Howard has previously talked about pay disparity with co-star Chris Pratt, and she's now explained that studio execs pushed for her to lose weight prior to shooting the threequel.
"What being in this third film allowed, how do I say this, how do I say this, how do I say this…[I’ve] been asked to not use my natural body in cinema," she told Metro (via SFFGazette.com) when they asked what she hopes her role as Claire will mean for women in cinema moving forward.
"On the third movie, it was actually because there were so many women cast, it was something that Colin felt very strongly about in terms of protecting me," Howard recalls, "because the conversation came up again, 'We need to ask Bryce to lose weight.'
He was like, 'There are lots of different kinds of women on this planet and there are lots of different kinds of women in our film' and I got to do so many stunts that wouldn’t have been possible if I had been dieting."
"So I’m really thrilled [at] all the action I got to do, and I got to do it with my body, she was at her maximum strength, and I hope it is just yet another indication of what’s possible," the actress concluded.
Jurassic World grossed $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office, while Fallen Kingdom earned $1.3 billion. The latest instalment, Dominion, brought in $974 million, and we're willing to bet that not one of those movies lost a cent because of Howard's weight. Instead, her star power more than likely only increased interest in the franchise.
It's crazy that this was a conversation in 2022, though, and it should be interesting to see whether Universal responds. In recent years, Howard has made an impact behind the camera, directing standout episodes of The Mandalorian. Hopefully, she'll continue to work on both sides, though, as she always impresses as a performer.
