Warner Bros. announced today that they've pushed back their upcoming Godzilla sequel, rumored to be titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters, from March 22 to May 31, 2019.
It now exits a busy spring that will see the releases of Marvel's Captain Marvel (March 8), Disney's Dumbo (March 29), and Warner Bros.' Shazam! (April 5) to a prime summer date where it will square off with the second week of Disney's Aladdin. Strategically, it's actually a pretty smart move as it opens far away from serious competition like Marvel's Avengers 4 (May 3) and several weeks before similar genre features like Sony's Men In Black (June 14) and Universal's Cowboy Ninja Viking (June 28).
In other news, Warner Bros. has also pushed back Mark Wahlberg's The Six Billion Dollar Man from May 2019 to June 5, 2020. Mike Flanagan's The Shining sequel, Doctor Sleep, has also been dated for January 24, 2020. Meanwhile, Paramount has unsurprisingly removed Transformers 7 from its release schedule and has also moved Pet Sematary up to April 5, 2019 while dating their Elton John biopic, Rocketman, for May 17, 2019.
Additionally, director Mike Dougherty has shared a very cool update from the film, teasing the arrival of Monster Zero, which is, of course, a not-so-subtle reference to King Ghidorah. The three-headed dragon, who was teased at the end of Kong: Skull Island, will be one of three monsters, along with Mothra and Rodan, that are expected to make their MonsterVerse debuts in the coming sequel.
