Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire just had a bigger-than-expected opening weekend and it sounds like more simians will soon find a similar level of box office success. According to Deadline (via SFFGazette.com), Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is eyeing a solid $54 million - $61 million opening weekend next month.

It's worth noting that the movie is still six weeks away, making this tracking quite a bit further out than normal (typically, we get numbers like these roughly three weeks in advance).

To compare, the 2001 Planet of the Apes reboot opened to $68.5 million, while the next one, 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes (which kicked off a trilogy that Kingdom serves as a successor to) earned $54.8 million during its first few days in theaters.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes later opened to $72.6 million and War for the Planet of the Apes debuted with a slightly less impressive $56.2 million, ending the story of Caesar before the franchise's planned jump further into Earth's future.

In related news, a recent AMC listing has seemingly confirmed that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be the longest Apes movie yet at a whopping 145 minutes (2 hours, 25 minutes).

This is expected to be the opening chapter of a new trilogy, though we're still not sure how it leads to the Ceasar from the original movies ruling over Earth (or whether the plan is for the franchise to throw time travel into the mix).

In the movie, director Wes Ball breathes new life into the global, epic franchise set several generations in the future following Caesar's reign, in which apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows.

As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes stars Owen Teague (IT), Freya Allan (The Witcher), Kevin Durand (Locke & Key), Peter Macon (Shameless), and William H. Macy (Fargo).

The screenplay is by Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) and Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Avatar: The Way of Water) and Patrick Aison (Prey), based on characters created by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, a new entry in 20th Century Studios' global, epic franchise, opens exclusively in theaters on May 10, 2024.

Seems on par for this franchise. Hopefully it can hold up to the last trilogy.

I hope it's great! It is the only movie left that I have any anticipation for this year...

@EZBeast - same here. I do look forward to Furiosa and A Quiet Place Day One, but this is definitely on top (although that might be because it's first to arrive)

EZBeast - 4/3/2024, 5:43 PM
@bkmeijer1 - furiosa will depend on reviews for me. I didn't care for a quiet place 2 and am never a big fan of prequels so I'll probably skip even though I must admit the trailer was dope.

After that I legitimately can't think of any movies I'm looking forward to...

@EZBeast - Atleast the trailers were solid, and that's enough to sell me. I have no idea what else is coming soon either though.

@bkmeijer1 - not excited for deadpool 3? I feel like most of my friends ate excited for that but it just isn't for me.

@EZBeast - I knew I was forgetting one. Yeah, I am. Probably forgot it because it's even further down the line than A Quiet Place

@MotherGooseUPus - lol war was my least favorite. Dawn was my absolute favorite ofthe group and I watched it so much it was one of the first movies I was able to fully quote lol

@EZBeast - interesting.... i very much like Dawn, and the action was better and i very close 2nd for me... but, i just think what Cesar goes through in War, his full arc, just makes it more of a cinematic journey and story i enjoy more... but i fully admit the action in Dawn was superior

@MotherGooseUPus - for me it wasn't so much the lack of action but how it was too much of a build up to a disappointing villian and essentially a faction war between 2 groups of human survivors. Ceasar's ending was great though and very fitting.

For me dawn's drama was epic and I loved the rivalry of Koba and ceasar, loved Maurice's fascination with the humans, and the interactions between the human cast and apes in general. The action was secondary and honestly nothing special but just epic how the world felt.

@EZBeast - just got out of seeing Godzilla x Kong. It was something else lol. I enjoyed it. it was campy AF. There was a TON of plot holes which the movie buff/engineer in me hates, but, it is a Godzilla movie so i can live with it. There was alot of wild hollow earth shit that is absurd but i didnt mind too much. Godzilla took a back seat which i didnt like, but i liked his arc and why he was powering up. I loved the fighting and action scenes throughout. Im not sure where i rank this movie in the monsterverse but overall i liked it. Good time to be a Godzilla fan

@MotherGooseUPus - Lol agreed bud! The plot was nonexistent but that seemed to resonate with audiences positively. My only true complaint was that I thought Shimu was highly underwhelming in appearance and when it fought but the monsters overall were great. It was clearly dumb fun and I hope they keep certain elements of that absurdity in the next film like the hollow earth, Dan stevens, and more unique titans (it was crime Tiamat didn't have more screen, she looked incredible!) but I do hope the next film is slightly more serious.

I have my fingers crossed that they end it with a destroy all monsters style film where the humans have committed to war against the titans and either accidentally create or release Destroyah who would need the combined strength of everything to oppose him.

@MotherGooseUPus - and im not saying minus one levels of serious but maybe Godzilla 2000 level of serious lol
EZBeast
EZBeast - 4/5/2024, 5:51 PM
@MotherGooseUPus - oh and for me the ranking would be:
Kong skull island (I know I'm still shocked how much I enjoyed that movie)
Godzilla vs Kong (absolutely delivered the hype)
Godzilla 2014 (right behind)
Godzilla x Kong
King of the monsters (I loved all the monster stuff and music, some of the best in the whole series, but the humans and camera angles just took me out of that film too much)
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 4/5/2024, 5:54 PM
@EZBeast - u agree. Shimu should of looked more badass but "she" looked more "feminine" so I guess they accomplished that. I also agree that Tiamut got screwed. She was badass too but got obliterated by bigG which I don't mind but we as fans should of seen more.

Dan Steven's was a joy. The humans were forgettable but him. I didn't like the way the girl was the savior and could bring back Mothra somehow.. that is nothing like Mothra in toho lore so I wasn't a fan of that.

I heard if wingard gets to complete "his trilogy " he's taking inspiration from Godzilla vs Destoyah and wants to have a junior godzilla, Destoyah or hedora(who I hate) and will potentially kill this Godzilla... but who knows. .. this was just a big dumb fun movie and I'm all for it... and as much as I enjoyed it... Minus One is a masterpiece

I still need to watch monarch lol
EZBeast
EZBeast - 4/6/2024, 8:40 AM
@MotherGooseUPus - monarch is pretty good. Far less entertaining than gxk but far more grounded. There is also some continuity errors like how they deal with the hollow earth (though I enjoy both). I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it if you can get past the young cast as I felt they're simply unlikable...
MotherGooseUPus
MotherGooseUPus - 4/6/2024, 9:49 PM
@EZBeast - I've heard the young cast is super annoying... I'll get past it, but I will watch it. I'm just glad i liked Godzilla x Kong cuz I was worried about it before the 3md trailer came out.

Yes it had lots and lots if issues and plot holes and I hated Godzilla got a backseat but.. I still had a blast watching it.

Bigger opening than I would've imagined honestly. We will see.

The last ones weren't exactly BO gold, but did decently enough.

Still excited though, need to rewatch the other ones.
EZBeast
EZBeast - 4/3/2024, 3:20 PM
@ThorArms - the first 2 were huge winners at the box office and war was the only disappointment.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 4/3/2024, 5:28 PM
@ThorArms - yeah. That's a big opening it true, and it's gonna need it with Furiosa closely following. I know I'll watch both, since both look great
Forthas

I can guarantee my admission fee will be a part of that opening amount.

The CGI looks like it reverted back to Rise of the Planet of the Apes but the movie itself still looks very good so I'll be there.

Hope it lives up to the previous trilogy though it has big shoes to fill!!.

With GxK and now this , could this be the year of the Monke?.

"we're still not sure how it leads to the Ceasar from the original movies ruling over Earth"

It doesn't. It's a rebooted continuity. Nothing about these movies fits into the continuity of the original quintology. The Caesar of these movies is based on the original Caesar character and the plot of Rise is inspired by the plot of Conquest. Other than character names and general ideas, nothing connects the new movies to the originals.
