Lost: Episode 6:16 What They Died For

After last weeks disappointment, has the show redeemed itself in this very important penultimate episode?..

Since there are only 2 episodes left and because we have a lot of Lost fans on here Galactus has kindly allowed me to post these last reviews in full here on CBM as well as over at Earths Mightiest.

In this ep we see the aftermath of the sub explosion, as well as finally catching back up with Ben, Richard and Miles. In the sideways verse Locke has a change of heart, and old Des is back to his teacher injuring ways again!

This ep is indeed a good un. The pacing is spot on leading up to the finale and a LOT of things happen, questions answered, destinies revealed. Basically all of the pieces are in place for the ultimate chess game..or backgammon if you like! It begins directly after the infamous "death sub" incident, with Jack, Kate, Sawyer and Hurley still evidently in shock at the loss of their friends. Kate brings up Sun and Jin's daughter(glad someone did !). But revenge as well as survival fuels them now and they set off to investigate Sayid's last words to Jack and see if they can rescue Desmond. We then cut to Ben and co as they reach Dharma/Otherville in search of explosives to blow up the plane. They get em, but also run into Widmore and Zoe. Widmore says that the reason he came back was because Jacob "showed him the error of his ways". This of course is an easy plot device which doesn't allow room for too many follow up questions..theres a lot of that type of thing this week! Anyway, they see Un-Locke approach from the water and guess pretty rightly that he will be in a foul mood. Miles skidaddles through the jungle, and Ben hides Widmore and Zoe in his secret chamber thing. While doing so we get another niggling question answered. This was a secret route to where he believed he was summoning the monster, turns out it was "summoning him all along". AH AHH..don't even think about asking a question, they're on a role here! Richard feels he can attempt to reason with Un-Locke so he and Ben step outside. Smokey kills Richard(probably). Its horseshit. Lost keeps killing these "minor" charters in such ridiculous ways. Jin, Sun and Sayid to a lesser extent at least got meaningful send offs, their deaths were important. But after setting up Richard with an amazing backstory they literally sweep him offscreen when they figure they can't work him into the final proceedings. Same for Ilana and Frank. Anyway, he(and Frank) may not be dead but just because they didn't pay us the courtesy of showing their bodies, at this point I seriously doubt we will be seeing em again. So Ben reverts back to type(it would seem), leading Un-Locke right to Widmore and Zoe. Un-Locke slices Zoe's throat in a quite graphic scene and threatens to kill Widmore's daughter Penny if he doesn't tell him why he brought Desmond back to the island. Ben shoots him before he gets the chance saying, "He doesn't get to save his daughter." One thing they don't answer is why Ben can do this. Remember a couple of seasons back when Widmore asked Ben if he had "come her to kill me" and Ben said "You know I can't do that". Well, he can now. Ben seems to be flat out eeevil again as he even asks Un-Locke who else he needs him to kill. But he did give Miles a walkie talkie and something tells me this is all a ruse and he will be betraying Un-Locke by the end. Back with team Jacob, Sawyer is feeling guilty about his part in the sub deaths(as well you should ya wally!) and Hurley is visited by young ghost Jacob boy dude. This leads all of them to finally hold an audience with Jacob as his ashes burn away in a fire. Kate demand to know what Jin, Sun and Sayid(again, no Frank) died for so Jacob sits em down and tells them all about the magic cave and its need for a protector. They all have a choice apparently. They didn't have a choice when the prick manipulated them onto the island of course! We also learn why Kates name was crossed off..its because she became a mother(ah ahh!). Anyway, surprise surprise, Jack steps up and volunteers to become the new Jacob. He drinks from the waters around the cave and is now apparently immortal like Jacob..unless a little scrawny dude stabs him of course. We cut to Un-Locke and Ben investigating Desmond's Well(good name for a band that..no? ok) and Un-Locke saying he shall now use Des to destroy the island!

Back in sideways verse its all kicking off too. Des comes back to the school and when confronted by Ben, lays a beating on him, jogging his island persona/reality in the process. Its clear that Des is now operating with full knowledge of the other reality..he may actually be island Des for all intents and purposes, if both beings are in fact split consciousnesses. So Ben explains what happened to Locke, prompting him to pay Jack a visit and change his mind about the surgery. It seems that Locke will walk again. Could this somehow tie into Locke getting the use of his legs back when the plain first crashed on the island? Because somewhere , somehow another version of himself was healed? Sure the time frames are out..now. But remember, in the sideways verse its only been a few days since the plane landed safely. Meanwhile, Des calls Jack pretending to be Oceanic airlines saying the found his fathers coffin. He then turns himself in to Sawyer's police station so he can be close to Sayid and Kate and stage a frakking prison break! Its pretty awesome. He has Anna Lucia paid off and cut them loose, and Hurley(also seemingly now fully aware) collect em. It clear that he is manipulating them all somewhere, physically and mentally. But how will all of this play out? Well I think there will be no merging of worlds or characters in a literal sense. I think instead, all of the island folk are dead meat except Jack and Un-Locke who will continue the game. I think that the sideways verse is where the characters will continue on, perhaps with full recollection, perhaps not.

Anyway, we will all know how it end this time next week, but this ep was a fine teaser for that biggest of finales. A bit of plot handiness aside it was as finely acted and scripted as Lost has ever been. Be sure to drop by for a special Lost retrospective and finale review, until then...

still don't know what makes Walt "special." Was Walt a candidate for being the one to finally kill smoky? Smoky's mom said that smoky was "special." Does "special" mean you can talk to dead people? How come no one noticed that Hurley's "special"?

LETS GET THE DEBATE GOING!!!

@ Talontd - Jack Bauer is The Punisher!

@ Rormachine - Nice article - Agreed: Jack and Locke will probably become the new Jacob & MIB.

Excited for the finish.

Dug the episode, but I hope they didn't kill off Richard like that.

The fkn body count has off the chart lately.

The end scene with Jacob was "The Moment" of the season, just like last season's moment was Faraday explaining how they could change things by blowing up a hydrogen bomb. (Remember, the Sopranos had hints to how it's final scene ended from their previous seasons. LOST could very well be going down like that, an ending tht may disapoint at 1st, but we'll eventually get).

The timelines are gonna merge at this concert. EVERYONE's gonna be there, and Juliet is definately Jack's ex. Maybe she will start off the chain of events that will merge the timelines (because "...it worked..."). That, and/or Locke's surgery. On the island, Ben's gotta pull off a badass betrayal to smokey, and Desmond's gonna nuke the island, possibly where the light is, pushing himself and Flocke into it. Maybe if you destroy the light, the timelines can merge...

I'll be pissed if Richard is dead, cause that was a really lame way 2 die! Mr Ecko's death was less lame than that!
and what happened to Miles?!!!

One thing that stuck in my craw was Ben.

I know that the "Smokey double cross" is the most obvious path, but I'm not sure Ben will do what we think. He never has.

What do you think of Jack replacing Jacob, and Ben as the new Smokey?

Interesting theory BillyBlack!
If the timelines merge, I wonder what will happen to Jack's son. It would be pretty sad if he was erased from existence. Sort of like this.

If the timelines merge and David still exists, then would he stay with Jack or find someone else to take care of him?

Is there anyone else NOT buying Jack being the new jacob?
almost like that would be too easy?

Great review as always ROR!

I have a horrible feeling that we'll be left with dozens of unanswered questions after the finale but I still cant wait for it! :)

This was a fantastic ep, and Ben taking out Widmore with that line was the crown jewel.I love how he justsold them out and said "they're hiding in my closet." hahaha Jack better pull some island gaurdian mojo out of his ass, I want a good fight at the end!Watch him get taken out with half an hour left and someone else has to take it on.

Got to agree they cheesed out w/ Richard....maybe he isn't dead but thats wishful thinking. I thought that guy was a great character, so much more than most but I saw it coming as soon as he said "he wants me...so I'll go talk to him." Then BLAM. Classic blunder, right up there with getting into a landwar in Asia or being in a game of chance with a sicilian when death is on the line.

@RocknRoll: lls! @ "waterworks"

@Pwent: I agree, it all fits together a little too well. Is Jack gonna die? Honestly, I'm kinda sympathizing with smoky here. Maybe he should blow up the island.

@JoshW: Don't you love how the writers insert lines like, "Every answer I give you will lead to another question" in order to shortcut the answers? Ah man! They're killing us!

@Antz: lls! I have four words for Richard: friendless, brainless, helpless, hopeless!

I've liked this whole entire season. Last weeks episode was needed. The problem was that there were so many questions and it was an origin episode that should have brought us more clarity. Tuesday's episode was a great follow up.

And if Jack dies, I'll be so sad.

Vital - 5/20/2010, 1:10 PM
Yeah if Jack dies I'm gonna flip shit lol. I have a feeling Sawyer is going to be the one sacrificing something (himself most likely) for Kate exclusively, or maybe for his friends? I just have this huge feeling he's going to do something like that. He already did it when they left the island, being selfless (which was one of the best things Sawyer has done on the island for his friends). I think Miles is going to die in lame fashion like Richard did. I also have a feeling Ben is going to [frick] over Smokey, to become the new MiB while Jack is the new Jacob. I think it would be a cool twist if Unlocke and Jack killed each other somehow, and it somehow brought back actual Locke (I miss him on the island, his character) and he became the new Jacob and MiB in one role. John Locke loved that island more than anything, so it would make sense to have him take care of it (if he came back that is).

But yeah, I knew it was going to be Jack, especially when Syid told him and the audience in his final words.

Good call on Jack and John taking over from Jacob and Nemeses. And everyone in the sideways-verse may all realize what has gone on and continue their relationships with those they had on the island...Or maybe Desmond becomes the new Jacob and is doing what Jacob did to get everyone on the island in the first place...Or maybe Jack will just wake up and it will all be a bad dream....But when he looks at the clock, it reads 4 8 15 16 23 42....Lost...

@Vital i too have wondered if when smokey dies will the real locke come back and take over for jacob.. sounds like the best person for the job. but, Jack being too easy as the replacement i would have the anti-hero be the new jacob, sawyer, bc he has been the one to sacrifice the most.
BillyBlack
BillyBlack - 5/20/2010, 2:53 PM
The real Locke was sacrificed so that Jack can realize his destiny to replace Jacob.

@Della: Jack is "23"? What're you talking about? Elaborate for me.

@Billy: Dude. Dude. Your last comment really got me. I'm embarrassed that I hadn't seen that earlier.

@Gambit: I'm sure Frank will be mentioned before it's all over. The writers are usually pretty good at acknowledging our questions about things that don't really line up.

@Della: Oh! Totally forgot about the numbers in the cave.
