Matt Reeves Hints At The Plot Of The Next PLANET OF THE APES Movie

We know where this story ultimately ends up, but what can we expect to see along the way? In an in-depth interview with The Playlist, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes director Matt Reeves gives us an idea of what we could see in the next installment..

Without getting into spoiler territory, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes does give is a proper ending, but at the same time leaves things open for the next film as we head towards the events of the original Planet Of The Apes. We know director Matt Reeves will return to helm (and write) the threequel, and during a very interesting chat with The Playlist he drops a few hints as to what story it might follow. Reeves says that he and co-writer Mark Bomback haven't finalized anything yet and are still tossing ideas around -- but it certainly sounds like there's a few elements that they're at least leaning heavily towards.

"I don't necessarily think that there will be as big a leap between films. I see Casear as a seminal figure in ape history and he's a mythic character. He's essentially like their Moses and I think Caesar having to grapple with what it means to engage in this conflict that he doesn’t really want to be a part of and how that cuts at his core is going to be one of the great challenges for the character. I also think it's a generational story. He has children and I think it's going to be… to me there are many chapters of this mythic ape journey towards the original '68 movie."

Don't expect the resolution of the next movie to even come close to directly tying into the original either, as Reeves says there are plenty more stories to tell in the lead up to 1968 classic -- as long as "the audiences interested in going on that journey with us", that is. I'll be seeing DAWN by the en of the week, it looks really good. As long as they don't overdo this.

Saw Dawn last night. Absolutely amazing film. Tied with DOFP as my favourite of the year. Can't wait for what's to come next. I'm all for them moving beyond three films with this story.

I just read that interview earlier today, and I found this particular quote pretty interesting. They obviously have a plan for the sequel, but I'm not entirely sure the next movie (called "War for the Planet of the Apes" maybe?) will be as fresh or interesting as Rise and Dawn.

I mean, Rise was about Caesar being a freedom fighter and leading a revolution, then Dawn explored how similar humans and apes really are, it showed us that one moment where a war COULD'VE been avoided, and we got invested in both sides so the battle was that much more devastating.

I seriously hope they can come up with something great for the next movie, other than just being 2 hours of apes and humans fighting. For me at least, there really has to be something else there other than a bunch of battles. I have faith though, especially with Reeves returning for the next movie.

Either way though...I say they kill of Caesar in the next movie (or give him a proper send-off) and then do a time jump of a couple hundred years or so, and then re-introduce that missing spaceship that was hinted at in Rise.

I really hope they bring the lost astronauts back as it was hinted in the first film.

DOTPOTA was so good. They left many questions, scenarios, and themes to explore in the next film.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939

Yes this is for sure a thing they must do if not in the third film then the fourth but at some point those people need to come back.

@Legendary

First trilogy will be how the apes took over the planet and enslaved humanity with the second be a full on Planet of the Apes setting. I suppose by the sixth film it will be either total annihilation like in Beneath or it will be humans and apes finding peace and coexist at last therefore fulfilling Caesar's wish and legacy.

I'm in a running disagreement with some guys about whether or not the crew of the Icarus mars mission will return at some point in 'the future' to give us a new take on the original Planet Of The Apes movie.

They seem to think that just because it big reveal about the history of man and ape is not a surprise, there is no point in doing the remake. i say they are crazy because Hollywood does what it want REGARDLESS of whether things make logical sense.

I should have bet those guys. Cuz I think I'm gonna be right.

I wonder if this franchise will use the mutants? Given how well they've handled the mythology so far I'm curious to see how they would do that.

Did any Humans leave Earth on an epic space journey before their civilization crumbled? How is Charlton Heston going to come back 100's of years later?

spoiler warning.......i didnt think they were hoing to end it there. i was hoping for more of a Rod Serling twist with the military assistance that was heralded actually being another ape army.

Great film,a better movie than Rise but I liked Rise too.
Dawn is great because you never have to have seen Rise & still fully enjoy it.
The Apes look amazing..can CG get any better? I mean really.

Trash-formers is pathetic,1st it's easy to create robots that don't really exist but the nuance & detail it takes to make apes that seem fully real & since apes actually exist we could detect flaws..this film is masterful from a technical aspect.
Add the solid story,it's really about family...easily one of the best films of any year.

I wonder how apes would win though. I mean even with humanity's numbers dwindled significantly, they still outnumber the apes who do possess human level intelligence, which are only restricted to the woods outside San Francisco.
BlindJustice

@Klone - I'm sure they will find a way. Besides, the apes are STILL evolving which will surely spell doom for the human race. Charles Darwin would find these movies most interesting indeed.

How about 'Planet of the Planet of the Apes'?
gaikinger
gaikinger - 7/18/2014, 4:17 PM
Spoiler warning.......we saw Koba fall but not die....I stuck around to see if their might be bonus footage at the end credits to see Koba had survived but no. Hes a good villain and could easily have survived the fall. Gotta say to stay away from those Everything Wrong With videos. Watched one on the first apes film and had no idea their were so many holes and gaffs, kinda ruined what ithought was a better film.

@Gaikinger: that grunting and sound of debris being moved at the end credits was supposedly the sound of Koba digging himself out!
