The Peter Jackson-produced Mortal Engines, which has earned unfavorable reviews to date, is facing quite the uphill battle this coming weekend as it faces-off with Sony's critically-acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and is currently looking at a potential debut in the $10 million to $17 million range, which would be a monumental disappointment considering its reported $100 million to $150 million production budget.

The Christian Rivers-directed adaptation of the popular book of the same name has already rolled out in a number of international territories, including Korea, Russia, and Australia, earning just over 20.1 million.

The film stars Hera Hilmar (Da Vinci's Demons) as the film's heroine, Hester Shaw, and features a supporting cast that includes Hugo Weaving (Captain America: The First Avenger), Robert Sheehan (Mute), Jihae (Mars), Leila George (The Long Home), Ronan Raftery (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Patrick Malahide (Game of Thrones), Stephen Lang (Avatar), and Colin Salmon (Krypton), amongst others.

People keep calling this Peter Jackson's but he is only one of five writers and produced it. It was directed by Christian Rivers

This movie had bomb written all over it. They tried to promote it hard with Peter Jackson’s producer credit and still a no go for me.

It looks really bad. A shame. We need more original blockbusters like this.

@Vanillain - Yay! Not a sequel. Kind of sick of Pixars subpar sequels like Cars 2-3, Monster University, and Finding Dory.

This movie looks trash, if I'm being honest. But I JUST found out it wasn't directed by Peter Jackson, so I'm less dumbfounded.

I watched it. It has some writing issues but I overall loved it. Great setting, beautiful effects, the main character and her relationship with a secondary villain is very interesting.

Maybe clicking because of it. Cause noone cares about this one, really.

I think they knew ahead of time this one was no good because I haven't seen a single ad for it besides that dumb Peter Jackson stamped teaser from a year ago.

I will likely not find the time to watch every somewhat interesting movie over the next weeks. Spider-Verse, Aquaman and Mary Poppins are pretty much set. If I can manage one more it'd likely be between Mortal Engines and Bumblebee.

Mortal Engines is an infinitely more interesting concept, but the trailers so far haven't exactly thrilled me, there's no one in the cast who'd make me want to see it more, and the reviews are weak.

Bumblebee has the serious disadvantage of being a Transformers movie, the trailers didn't exactly thrill me either, but it has Hailee Steinfeld and pretty glowing reviews. Hurm.

I kind of wish we'd get Jackson's World War I documentary instead of either of the two.

Seen it already here in oz. Surprisingly good. The visuals were stunning, concept is good, action was cool. Story was pretty generic but didn't really pass thru my head. But overall a fun flick. 7/10

It's a movie about entire cities on wheels, which is so ridiculous to me. And it's a young adult movie, and they're rarely ever good. I was slightly curious at first, but only because Peter Jackson.
