Pacific Rim Plot Details Surface

A draft of Travis Beachem's script for Guillermo Del Toro's next project has leaked, and the plot scarily brings to mind what is happening in Japan and the Pacific as I type this..

I have to say, given the tragedy occurring in Japan and the Pacific at the moment I actually got a bit of a shock when I read the premise for Pacific Rim. As natural disasters rage there in reality, this movie's story focuses on mythical creatures rising from the depths to wreak havoc.

Here is the breakdown from Newsinfilm

In alternate version of Earth in the near future, decades after a historic date in November 2012 when the first kaiju, a towering Godzilla-like beast, emerged from a hole in the Pacific Ocean and attacked the city of Osaka, Japan. The second is “The Anteverse,” another universe on the other side of that gaping portal, 5 miles below our ocean’s surface.

Since the first attack, the rim has been “spitting out” a variety of gigantic monsters at an increasing rate, which then stride out of the ocean and begin destroying sea-bordering cities, like Tokyo and Los Angeles. In order to combat these monstrous, otherworldly menaces, the military developed the “Jaeger” program, which trains teams of two pilots to jointly operate massive, building-sized mechanized suits of armor and high-tech weaponry.

Within the first act alone, we are given enough detailed background on the god-like Jaeger systems, its shared neural piloting system (called “pons”), and the relentless beasts. But Beacham is an absolute master at immediately establishing characters and their conflicts.

The central character is Raleigh Antrobus, 23, a skilled Jaeger pilot still wrestling emotionally with the loss of his co-pilot and biological brother, Yance, during a mission a year earlier. The ordeal has wreaked havoc on his mind spirit, leaving him with ghostly nightmares of the battle from the shared “pons” experience. After the initial setup, the damaged hero is recruited to re-join the task force in Tokyo, where pilots are in demand, and team with a fellow “leftover,” 22-year-old female Japanese pilot Mako Mori. Naturally, the language barrier (among other things) presents an issue for the out-of-sync duo, meaning an even steeper learning curve for the unprecedented pairing.
Meanwhile, Felicity “Flick” Kincaid, a journalist and Yance’s former fiancée, circles the globe (ours) to discover answers about this mysterious rift and the origins of its intensifying threat.

I'm not sure what effect(if any) this will have on Del Toro or Legendary Pictures development of the movie will have(It's due to shoot in September) but I can't imagine they will be relishing the prospect of starting work on a film of this kind right at the moment. Anyway, as for the plot itself, it sounds ok. To be honest I was hoping for something a little more original. But if the script is as good as Newsinfilm suggest(click the link below for more details) and with a director like Del Toro at the helm I look forward to hearing/seeing more about it.

mecha vs monsters not exactly the most original idea, but the whole pilots being in sync with each other sounds good, has potential to be good and bad but atleast in the hands of some one like Del Toro so it could turn out to be great. But I'll reserve my judgement as usual, I wonder if there going to change the location for the movie or not

This sounds like a cool premise but I think it will fall short. I don't get the love Del Toro receives. His movies aren't that great. Hellboy was awful. Pan's Labyrinth was his best film and that's not saying much. It was better in black and white! I believe Suckerpunch will be better than this movie a hundred times over..... but I could be wrong. The trailer could always [female dog] slap me back in place soooo....

@intruder OKAAYYY!! F*ck that. With the millions of dollars between Del Toro and Cruise they could've had ATMoM in pre-production already. Not very realistic, I know. But directors have taken bigger chances. Studios just suck. And I have a feeling it's all because of the R/PG-13 rating thing. What really separates an 'R' and a 'PG-13' anyway nowadays? Studios and people in general have chosen ridiculous special effects over storylines over the past decade. Avatar? Yeah, I remember when it was called Dances With Wolves. Regurgitate a story, but throw in a ton of CGI and you have yourself a box office hit. I'm looking for originality. Doesn't get more original than H.P. Lovecraft. All I'm saying is Mountains of Madness, when completed, will be better than Pacific Rim. In all honesty I will see Pac Rim though, because I like movies.

@Intruder- ATMOM wouldve been EPIC with Del Toro!!! Flat out. You know what killed it? Tom Cruise. AAAAANNND... i'll throw Scientology in there too (just for lulz, of course...of course)

@intruder - When you have millions of dollars to blow on a film, by all means, I hope you do it.

I don't blame studios afraid to invest in projects that are not likely to make a profit or even make back their money. I blame the audiences that keep paying to see the same 'ol, same 'ol. That's why you're seeing reboots and remakes and The Smurfs. People spend their money on things they already know or are already big. When stuff like Scott Pilgrim and Kick-Ass (neither of which were truly original since they were based on pre-existing works, but were still very well done) bomb, how is that supposed to encourage producers and studios to invest in new properties?
