REBEL MOON - PART 1: A CHILD OF FIRE Debuts With 72% Audience Score On Rotten Tomatoes

The majority of critics may have given Zack Sndyer's Rebel Moon - Part 1: A Child of Fire a sound thrashing, but the Netflix sci-fi movie has debuted with a much better audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The review embargo for the first part of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon lifted on Friday, and critics have not been kind to the divisive director's Seven Samurai-inspired sci-fi yarn.

A Child of Fire is currently sitting at a pretty dire 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, and we don't anticipate that score climbing much higher. An early audience score is a much better 72%, but can these user "reviews" be trusted?

A Child of Fire did arrive in theaters for a limited run over the weekend, and even though it's only playing in select locations, we're sure quite a few Snyder fans have ventured out to see it by now. Even so, a quick read through of the accompanying reviews will likely tell you everything you need to know!

"Review bombing" is a common occurrence on the aggregator, although it's usually users down-voting movies they have taken issue with for whatever reason. Snyder has a very loyal and very vocal fan-base, however, so this isn't too surprising.

Do you plan on giving Rebel Moon a go despite the negative reviews? Drop us a comment down below.

"[Rebel Moon] really feels like Snyder directed his original three-hour cut and then decided to remove a bunch of scenes from the final act instead of actually re-editing and crafting a cohesive, satisfying narrative for the 2 hour, 20 minute Netflix version," we said in our review.

From Zack Snyder, the filmmaker behind 300, Man of Steel, and Army of the Dead, comes REBEL MOON, an epic science-fantasy event decades in the making. When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.

The heroes of Rebel Moon are: Kora (Sofia Boutella), an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back; Kai (Charlie Hunnam), a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest; Gunnar (Michiel Huisman), a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the galaxy; General Titus (Djimon Hounsou), a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium; Tarak (Staz Nair), a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu; Nemesis (Doona Bae), a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons; Darrian Bloodaxe (Ray Fisher), an insurgent who has been harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks; and Milius (E. Duffy), a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World.

Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire hits Netflix on December 21. The sequel, Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, will debut on April 19, 2024.

Isn’t that still kind of bad tho?

Aren’t usually generally liked movies above 80?

Like with the Cinemascore, anything in the Bs is low except if it’s a horror movie

@MisterDoctor217 - Esp with a limited release you would expect mostly superfans to be those to go that extra mile to watch...

...a slight tell is only TWO of the audience reviews are verified ones of having actualy purchased a ticket and read through a bunch of them and a lot of tells to suggest that the vast majority (both negative and positive) haven't actualy watched the film so I wouldn't trust the audience numbers at all.

To your point however, yeh, normaly look for well into the 80's for most audience reviews scores these days to counter a poor critic review score (as a likely fair one would be somewhere midway between the two).

@Apophis71 -

Wait only two of those reviews are verified ? That’s crazy cause wasn’t verification a method to avoid the mess that came with boycotting movies and all that ?

But yeah probably most of those ratings haven’t even watched it.

Not saying it’s a bad movie cause I haven’t seen it , but lol it’s Zack Snyder, we know how obsessed people can be with him and his projects.

@MisterDoctor217 - Yup, this probably falls into a grey area due to being a streaming film with limited release as think now the norm is the front page number based on the verified reviews.

Snyder makes some entertaining action scenes so I'm willing to give it a chance for that, I liked what he did with the fight choreography for Watchmen especially.

I think that the audience score is generally a better gauge of the quality of a movie except in rare occasions...and this is one of them. People who like Snyder are certainly going to skew this up. In this case I will judge for myself. I suspect it will be a typical Zack Snyder film which means it is OK or it is bad. The only thing he has ever made that was exceptional is Man of Steel.

@Forthas - After the story about bots used to upvote for the oscar I dived into the user reviews, they don't read as reliable (and that goes for the bad ones too tbf).

Shame cos was hoping it would be good from a GA point of view even if critics had low opinions but way to many greatest film ever/masterpiece tye comments along with digs at Star Wars and Marvel and way too few verified to trust anything from the score the audience review lands on.

@Forthas - I don't really follow either scores, but I generally would trust critics more, because they usually don't spam either the highest or lowest scores, just to make a point, and their standards are higher than "this 2+hrs movie had 10 minutes of kinda cool action shots you could just wait and see on youtube and nothing else going for it, therefore it was worth it".

If Netflix gave him full creative control, why is there already talk of a director's cut? Why can't his movies be 2/2 and a half hours?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/17/2023, 1:53 PM
@MyCoolYoung - Fairly sure I read Snyder himself officially stated there was going to be a longer version on Netflix long before it was released (think the long version he said would be R rated but my memory is fuzzy on it).
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/17/2023, 1:59 PM
@MyCoolYoung - he gave them a lean 2 hour PG-13 cut to release and then gave them a 3 hour R rated cut. It’s called more bang for your buck.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 12/17/2023, 5:29 PM
@TheLobster - yeah but this happens with all his movies and just like with all his prior movies, I'm only watching one
TheLobster
TheLobster - 12/17/2023, 7:36 PM
@MyCoolYoung - it’s happened with Watchmen, BvS, and now Rebel Moon so I wouldn’t say all his films lol

Also BvS was because WB greenlit his script and then forced him to cut 30 minutes out of the theatrical cut late in post because WB was a [frick]ing clown car.. so it’s only been 2 films in all actuality.

All this means is 72% of the audience rated this as a 60 and rated fresh. I wish everyone would stop using RT. It's a rating system to promote crappy movies as good, and it's making everyone's perception of a great movie skewed af! I personally trust imdb the most, my score feels the same on every movie lol. [frick] RT! I'll make a new rating system! After I buy my land for the most stae of the art movie theater in Ohio, and the world!

As someone who is a fan of Snyder movies I distrust the audience score just as much as I distrust the critical one. A lot of critics have a hate boner for him and that’s fine his stuff isn’t for everyone, but his followers are also spam happy and will inflate the metrics on just about anything. The only real way to know what you think about his films is to watch them but given how long they are I don’t think it’s worth it for people who haven’t liked his stuff up until now. I’m looking forward to it but at this point reviews for his movies don’t really matter because everyone has made up their mind from one extreme to the other form what I’ve seen

@WruceBayne - no reviews can be trusted except your own
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 12/17/2023, 2:06 PM
@WruceBayne - No review can be trusted but your own however Mark has seen the film, posted a review of it and able to read the audience reviews on the site so (if he is being honest) could be in a position to assess if there is a big disconnect between what he watched and what the RT comments on it are to think they haven't seen the film at all. That said, obviously as he has watched the film that puts a bias in place when reading the reviews of others on if he would trust them and then the do we trust the authors opinions on this at all either way.

Important to note how widespread reports of bots used for upvoting in relation to Snyder films with the oscars is going to make folk generaly more skeptical of any online polls too but, again, ultimately the only review you should ever trust is your own or maybe folk you know well IRL whose opinions you trust.
