Ridley Scott On The Alien Prequel

Ridley Scott On The Alien Prequel

At the Hero Complex Film Fest, Scott was interviewed and spoke about, among other things, the upcoming prequel to Alien..

In this interview with Hero Complex's Geoff Boucher, Scott talks about many of his movies, including the original Alien, Blade Runner, Legend etc. But this is all about the highly anticipated prequel to his first(best?) film.

Here are the main bits. With both quotes from Scott, and bullet points of info..

“I sat thinking about the franchise, which now has died on the road somewhere way back and lying in the dust, and thought what I should do is go back… in the first Alien, when John Hurt climbed up and over the top of the rise… there was a massive giant lying in a chair. The chair was either a form of engine or some piece of technology and I always thought no one has ever asked who was the space jockey?”

- The Alien prequel will be broken into two films. The scripts are written and Scott is prepping it now.

- Time frame is way before Alien. Not only will we find out who the Space Jockey is, we’ll find out where his people come from.

- The first Alien was The Old Dark House with 7 people with an unwelcome visitor. Scott loved the script, but it was a very basic screenplay.

-The prequel will go further into the world of terraforming and will focus on the realities of what it takes to leave for another planet. He mentioned the theory of Near Faster-Than-Light travel, which is complete science fiction at the moment; “Mr. Spock stuff” as he called it, rearranging matter essentially, but theoretically possible. “But what we’re allowed to do by movies is to cheat like hell. But I think the closer it is to the truth, the closer it is to the technological feasibility then it becomes that much more interesting. And if it’s a film like the one I’m going to do, then it becomes that much more frightening.”

Scott also mentioned they're going to be exploring Zeta 2 Reticuli, the same system from Alien. Naturally they'd be going back at some point if the prequel leads up to Alien, but from what Scott was saying it seems like this system plays a large role in the prequels.

- On the Space Jockey: “I think beneath that carcass… it’s not a carcass, it’s a suit. Inside the suit is a being.”

Thanks to Quint over at AICN for the info. Out of all of this, that last part about the Space Jockey being a suit has me most intrigued. That was one part about the first film that I always wondered about. I love James Cameron's Aliens too, and I even think both of the next films have some merit, but Scott's original is not only one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, its up there among the best period imo. I really hope this prequel goes back to the character driven claustrophobia of Alien.

By Space Jockey do they mean the giant alien being guy that they found in the first film?

Meh... I don't think there's anything more to bring to these franchises. I'm not anticipating the new Predator film either. It seems all stale to me now. Scott'll make this franchise suck as much as Robin Hood's. I'd like something new, fresh and inventive... that also doesn't look like Smurfs imitating Dances With Wolves in Fern Gully. You know... something ORIGINAL.

Shaman if SCott wasn't at the helm I would agree but I think(hope!) that he has the good sense not to further turn this franchise into an abomination of the original and instead go back to basics. Great, relatable characters that we actually care about like the crew of the Nostromo. As much as I enjoyed Aliens it lost that a bit(although Hicks, Hudson, Bishop and of course Ripley were cool) and from then on it was just how many nameless idiots can we feed to the aliens. I'm also worried about Predators though, despite the cast. Looks a bit like more of the same.

Pooch, I started it twice and decided against it. I just couldn't figure out a way to put my point across that didn't seem like I was completely bashing it, and I didn't want to because I thought it enjoyable enough from a certain point of view, I just don't like those type of films in general kinda felt like I was doing a disservice by reviewing it because I was never going to like it as much as an action movie fan would. Is that a total cop out? haha. Maybe I still will at some point.

The best thing about the original is that it lead to the sequel. I think Cameron isn't what he used to be, but darn if Aliens is one of my favorite movies of all time. I'd rather have an action movie with characters you cared about like the second one, than the "character driven claustrophobia of Alien". Like Scott said, its just a haunted house story.

Also, how can you bring back Bill Paxton? Even if it is a prequel, I think that "Game over man! GAME OVER!" has a permanence that goes beyond time and space! I'm surprised he made another movie after that.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/14/2010, 6:56 AM
The second one didn't have half of the tension though. Yeah it was exiting, but 90% of those marine dicks were just walking cliches waiting for death and I couldn't have cared less. The original crew were real people, real actors too! The script was also amazing. Don't get me wrong, Cameron stepped it up as any sequel should, I just want something more like the first one now that Scott is back in control.

Ror- Forget about A-Team! Get to work on Superman Returns :))

Oh and i agree with you about the pros and cons of Aliens. I think that the only reason it is so reveared today is because it was one of the first in it's genre to be great. Other than that, i'll take Scott's character developement over splosions. Even so, i still feel that Alien lacked a little bit in places and i really don't see what Scott could bring to improve on the source. Event Horizon surpassed that film tenfold IMO. It had everything that Alien didn't. But to get to that level, you need a more inteligent threat than the Alien specie they have. My favorite of the series is resurection. I know, i know. Still, that one took it somewhere else entirely and it's why i liked it so much. Plus Ridley was sexy as hell in it :))

Mass- Paxton's only redeemable performance was in True Lies. Other than that, he sucks ass like a shop vac!

MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 7:03 AM
Well, that's just a difference in what kind of movie you want to see, suspense or action, but I seem to recall thinking that the whole crew was screwed right of the bat in the first one. I was just waiting for them to die. Marines ought to have a chance. I thought they did a good job making you care about the marines in the second one. Like when Vasques sees Drake got all acidified, and when Vasques and Groman set of the grenade in the air duct? That is good stuff right there.

@Shaman - you like resurrection the best? Well...better that cubed. Actually, I may enjoy it more than the original. That alien human hybrid is one of the UGLIEST monsters ever on screen! Oh, and it has Ron Pearlman, of course. Paxton should stick to comedy, I guess.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 6/14/2010, 7:24 AM
That hybrid looked like a melted candle, I hated it. In fact, I would have enjoyed Resurrection more without it. Guys Paxton is a great actor. He makes some crap movies, but check out One False Move, Near Dark, A Simple Plan or Frailty for some great performances.

Mass, yeah I cared about some of em, a bit! But it just wasn't the same. I agree that they certainly had more of a fighting chance, but I still knew it was gonna come down to Ripley, Newt..maybe Hicks at the end. The first time I saw Alien I had no idea there even was a sequel, so I was unsure what the outcome would be.

Pooch, nah, just not my cuppa at all. Performances were ok I guess, If you don't count Rampage, Copley's Sarrf Efrikkan accent and Cooper playing Face as a cocky, sleazeball douchebag as opposed to a charming ladies man.

I was a fan of both Alien and Aliens. 3 not so much and i stopped after that one. I like Bill Paxton as an actor and I liked the marine setting in part 2 but wished they kicked more ass not just die off 1 at a time. Robert Rodriguez is an awesome director and will definately bring alot to the new Predators movie. He seems to be taken a more suspenseful approached yet still have the action. This should be intresting to see what ridley does. I have high hopes. I am a fan of the franchise. Both Aliens and Predator as well.

Ven0m - 6/14/2010, 7:28 AM
@ Ror I loved Frailty. They should make a Aliens vs Marines vs Predator movie. Not the AVP shit we have been getting.
Shaman
Shaman - 6/14/2010, 7:32 AM
Mass- Yeah, that hybrid was the worst part of the film. Well that and the wheelchaired freak. But Ripley was at her best IMO. I liked her better in that one than in any of the others. The third one is the worst for me. I liked the atmosphere of the first, the action of the second and the development of the fourth. In the fourth, every character was intriguing. Pearlman was awesome, Wincott kicks ass in everything he does, Dourif sells creepy for a living so he nailed it, and Dourdan was electrifying and endearing! Even Ryder didn't anoy me as much as she usually does. It was very Event Horizonish... just the way i like it ;P

The second one i do enjoy but mixing it with the first's "feel" would have been an awesome amalgam. I feel that's what they did with the fourth which is why i like it so much ;)
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 7:34 AM
@RorMachine - OH! Words eaten! I totally loved Frailty and I forgot about Near Dark... I gotta rewatch that.

The bottom line for me is my favorite movies are action movies with characters you care about. Aliens nails it. When Hicks shoves that shot gun in that aliens mouth the deal is sealed. Easily one of the top 5 action movies of all time.

MassExecutions - 6/14/2010, 7:37 AM
My saying the hybrid was UGLY was a complement. If you can come up with a monster design that makes me sit up and take notice, that's something.

I'm so excited for this, I love these movies even though none of the sequels were as great as the original. Besides, I'm really curious about the origin of the Space Jockey and Ridley is back so it should be good :')

Classic!

I agree with teabag completely

The first three were really good (#3 being under-rated IMO as well) Resurrectum was absolute dogshit. No redeemable qualities at all. I hope Scott can bring this franchise back from the brink, but I'm not all too optimistic.

I also agree about the funbags on MaryJaneWatson from the Vinny D'onofrio article. Good Lord!

I'm gonna have to partially disagree with your statement there Todd Gray.

I though Fincher's 3 was a real good time. It had a decent story to it, and Charles S. Dutton brought serious wood. Didn't have close to the game of it's predecessors, but I wouldn't call it a "shameless franchise rip-off".

You are right on the money about Resurrection though.

I'm actually pretty anxious to see some of these upcoming prequel and remake movies: Rise Of The Apes, Highlander: The Reckoning, Predators, etc. I'm just curious to see how other directors approach characters that people are already so familiar with.
