Roland Emmerich Wants STARGATE Reboot & Meeting Will Smith For INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

While promoting his new movie, White House Down, director Roland Emmerich mentions to Digital Spy that he will meet with Will Smith about a sequel to Independence Day, and has chatted with MGM about making a new Stargate trilogy.

In June, Roland said that Will Smith would not reprise his role, Captain Steven Hiller, in an Independence Day sequel. The original film, which was released in 1996, was a box office hit ($800m), and many people assumed a sequel would be right around the corner, but it hasn't really gotten any traction until recently, with a release date set for July 3, 2015. As I was saying, Will Smith wasn't expected back, Emmerich using the excuse that Will Smith was too expensive, but apparently something has changed. He tells Digital Spy, "I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

For Will Smith, this makes sense. He made the disastrous decision of passing on the lead in Quentin Tarantino's highly-acclaimed film, Django Unchained, so that he could make M. Night Shyamalan's atrocious film, After Earth. The box office bomb stunk of nepotism, with Jaden Smith turning in another awkwardly bad performance.

And Emmerich, he isn't sitting pretty either. White House Down was another film that performed very poorly at the box office. Some will tell you that it didn't perform well because Olympus Has Fallen, a film with a nearly identical plot, opened before it, but that isn't true. Olympus Has Fallen, while not great, it is highly entertaining and is lead by a strong performance from Gerard Butler. While White House Down had the bigger star power, with Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum, but it was hell bent on dumbing down the audience.

Alright, let's move on to Stargate. Roland says he always wanted to make a trilogy, but now the stars of the 1994 film, Kurt Russell and James Spader, are too old. Which I totally agree with. It's not like James Spader could pull off a big budget film any more. Just look at his filmography, the next film on his plate his some small independent film called Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Anyways, Roland revealed his vague plans for Stargate: "We went to MGM, who has the rights, and proposed to them to do a sequel, but as a reboot, and reboot it as a movie and then do three parts,"

There's still talk of a ID4 sequel? O_o the hell?! Is there really that much of a demand for it?

Screw another Independence Day movie, I'd much rather see a Hancock sequel personally

Will will pass as he's now "Corporate Will" and no longer "90's entertaining movie star Will" and will instead pull write/fund/promote another Jayden Smith summer vehicle. Wonder who he'll use as the fall guy next.

" He made the disastrous decision of 'passion' on the lead in Quentin Tarantino's highly-acclaimed film, Django Unchained,"
I think you mean 'passing' there.

MGM really need to do something with their Stargate franchise.

As far as Stargate goes, they really did rush the ending on Stargate Universe. It doesn't need a reboot, just a new direction for the franchise.

"Jaden Smith turning in another awkwardly bad performance."

Not trying to be a dick here but that statement is distorted. Even if his performance didn't own up I still honestly believe he did well in both Karate Kid and The Pursuit of Happiness. Are they Oscar award winning performances "Hell No!" The kid is still coming up give him a break.

Anyway great to hear they're meeting up again! Smith needs to get back to making box office hits! Seven Pounds was the last strong performance I saw from him. Really want to see him back in the action movies! I Am Legend was great as well! At first they said he would star in a prequel but now I think he'll look a bit older than how he did in the 2007 film.

Smith I know you've got "Winter's Tale" on the way but you should come on back to the film franchise that truly started you off! :D

In regards to Stargate, whether it's a sequel or a reboot, the problem is that there is no way of making another theatrical film that won't alienate fans of the television series. SG-1 was a completely adapted interpretation, and had nothing to do with the original plans for a sequel. A sequel to the original would certainly retcon everything introduced in the TV shows. Everything. So rather than make a sequel 20 years later, they are better off rebooting it.

Does the original movie need a reboot? No. In fact it's likely that a reboot will end up turning into some type of action suspense popcorn flick, rather than having an intelligent exploration theme that made the original so good. But I digress.

Stargate was Awesome, Hydra. I Grew up on Stargate and all three Stargate Series (SG-1, Atlantis and Universe) so i would suggest that you keep your opinions to yourself.

Man.. the elements the TV series was able to introduced need to be incorporated into it and make a reboot. The ancients, asgard and all. The Four races and all that.. And we need to see the goddamn furlings!

Please give us a sequel/reboot to Stargate. The Stargate universe is my sci-fi universe of choice. I like it more than Star Wars and Star Trek. I lived off SG-1 for a decade.

I'd love to see more from that universe on the big screen, it can't stay dead.

I would like another Stargate film but not by him. Maybe by Neill Blomkamp instead.

As for ID2 I don't see why you need a sequel because the aliens were killed. The only way I could see it working and could be cool is if Earth is a lot better in technology. Because of reverse engineering the broken alien tech. I myself don't want to see just a repeat of the last movie so with earth tech being a lot better it can change up the movie & how the new fights with the aliens will be.

@Emjeed & 113 - The problem is that the TV shows were, aside from the basic premise, completely original. If Emmerich gets his way, it is unlikely that they will borrow any of those ideas. Emmerich and Devlin created the original film and supposedly already had ideas for any possible sequel(s). I doubt we will see anything resembling SG-1 and the universe it created, not even the Jaffa, or the Goa'uld as snake like symbiotes (let alone any of the future races that were introduced).

That's why I say reboot it and ignore everything else. At least that way, it will stand on its own merits, and we can have the old movie/tv show canon preserved, as well as this completely separate trilogy of films.

Well both men may have had a "coming to Jesus" moment after this summer's bombs.

What I would love to see is what would be the effect of having most of the world's greatest cities getting destroyed on global society. Would the nations of the world have rebuilt as individual nations or would they have formed a united earth?

I could see Will coming back not as a pilot but as a General leading the new war effort.

Pullman should be brought back as an advisor to the current President which would be Jeff GoldBloom's character.

Will please say yes. But if Emmerich really really really wants to do Independence Day 2, then he needs to watch the first one and remember what made that so good... not just Will Smith. BUT JEFF MOTHER[frick]ING GOLDBLUM GET THIS DUDE BACK ON! And no Jaden Smith... or Willow.
