Andy Serkis' work as a predominantly motion capture performer has changed the way movies are made.  Over the years he's put in pioneering work in the Lord Of The Rings films, King Kong, Tin Tin, two Planet Of The Apes films and upcoming roles in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Star Wars: Episode VII.  But does his achievments entitle him to an academy award considering the amount of CGI involved?  Check out the embedded video below for Mr Sunday and Mason's view on the matter.  And be sure to share your thoughts below and to subscribe to Mr Sunday's new channel, youtube.com/mrsundaymovies.

He should win something, this guy is amazing at what he does. Sadly, whoever seems to be the deciders for these kind of things are idiots most of the time in regards to Oscars.

@Jollem Compltley agreed. It's baffling how none of those guys have gotten an Oscar yet.

Stuntmen don't get Oscars so why should Mocap actors get them. People should stop clowning around with this Serkis business.

Andy Serkis should at least be eligible to be nominated as a lead actor for his role as Caeser.

If he was buried in makeup, no one would be arguing that the makeup guys should be given credit for his PERFORMANCE. The VFX folks already have their own categories.

It's Serkis' VOICE, it's Serkis PERFORMANCE.

Give the guy a nomination.

Absolutely. He should have won an Oscar years ago.

Its about time the idiots at the Oscars recognize real talent and skill instead of picking the sane Hollywood performers every year. Oscars are a joke IMO.

@Rust and yossarian, they are not stuntmen. Your comparison is completely unrelated. As MisterPL said, it is their performance and voice, and they are just as present and as talented as the other actors around them.

F*ck yeah, he should get it!

I agree that he should be eligible for voice acting nominations but making an award especially for him(lets face it, he'll win every year) is ridiculous.

if actors in the movie the The Artist, can win or be up to win awards... Serkis should for the emotion he brings to the work he has done.

no, but the VFX artists should
Foolkiller
Foolkiller - 7/18/2014, 8:27 AM
Absolutely not. CGI and Mo-Cap are lazy film-making. The only CBM I have seen which deserves a n oscar was for Michael Caine in The Dark Knight rises.
CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 7/18/2014, 8:29 AM
No.

What he does is amazing but there's so much more work that goes into a mo-cap performance than just Serkis. What makes it so spectacular are the CGI animators.

It annoys me when people ONLY credit Andy Serkis.

But yeah, I get torn on subjects like this actually.
I felt ScarJo (who people know I'm not a fan of her acting in general) should've gotten a nomination for "Her", what she did with her voice was nothing short of amazing.

There's a significant difference between MOTION capture and PERFORMANCE capture.

Serkis is on the cutting edge of PERFORMANCE capture which is far more nuanced than simpler motion capture, which is just high-tech rotoscoping.

You can't look at Serkis' performance before the CG and not see and hear Caesar. The CG is essentially digital makeup, pixels instead of latex and fur.

And stunt people don't even have an Oscar category. Actors do. Apples and oranges.

Not gonna happen. [frick] the Oscars.

I think this needs a new category. Best mocap performance/animation. The team involved is awarded it, like for best VFX or something.

How about we wait until we see the rest of the films coming out this year. We still have five months of movies that are still eligible to be nominated. Oscar talk in July is dumb.
Phronesis
Phronesis - 7/18/2014, 8:51 AM
@CherryBomb Nowadays, there isn't much work for the animators. Mo-Cap has evolved to such a point where the actors literally take control of the performance. For example, when Serkis mo-capped King Kong back in 2005, a huge percentage of that was based off key-framing. But if you go see Dawn, most of Cesar movements, facial expressions, it's all him. There are some instances when the animators need to move... Let's say fur to interact with the environment, but 75% of that performance is Andy, not the animators.
