Variety is reporting that the Academy Award-winning duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse; 21 Jump Street) have been tapped to direct and produce MGM's upcoming film adaptation of The Martian author Andy Weir's next sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary, which has 2x Academy Award-nominee Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049; The Nice Guys) attached to star and produce.
Plot details are scarce, but the film is described as solitary tale of an astronaut (Ryan Gosling) on a space ship who has been tasked with saving the planet.
This is the third of Andy Weir's acclaimed works to land in the hands of Lord & Miller following his novel Artemis and his graphic novel Cheshire Crossing, with the pair also expected to direct the former.
Amy Pascal (Spider-Man: Far from Home; Spider-Man: Homecoming), Aditya Sood (Deadpool 2; The Martian), and Ken Kao (The Nice Guys; Hostiles) are also serving as producers on the currently untitled project.
While the book won't be released until next Spring, it - along with much of Weir's work - has been in high demand ever since the immense success of Ridley Scott's The Martian, which starred Academy Award-winner Matt Damon (The Last Duel; Jason Bourne) in the lead role and garnered widespread critical and commercial acclaim, receiving seven Academy Award nominations, winning two Golden Globes and earning over $630 million worldwide.
