BOX OFFICE: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Opens With $3.25M; IRON MAN 3 Knocked From #1

But it wasn't Star Trek Into Darkness that beat the Marvel Studios movie! Instead, The Great Gatsby caused what has been described as "a stunning box office upset for the ages" by taking #1 yesterday. Hit the jump for a whole host of updates!

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness started off strong at the North American box office with an estimated total of $3.25 million taken from late show pre-midnight screenings and the actual midnight showings in the early hours of Thursday morning. The majority (£2 million) came from the sequel's early IMAX 3D release, while approximately $1.25 million of that was specifically from the midnight showings. With a budget of $190 million, it's thought that Star Trek Into Darkness will gross between $80 - 100 million by close of business on Sunday. Internationally, it has taken upwards of $40 million so far. In other box office news, The Great Gatsby managed to become the #1 movie in America yesterday by beating Iron Man 3 in what was described by one studio exec as, "a stunning box office upset for the ages." However, bear in mind that Iron Man 3 has been open for weeks and lost ticket sales to Star Trek Into Darkness. Its current worldwide cume is $990.5M.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

i wonder why star trek into darkness knocked iron man 3 of the top spot? $980,323,579 maybe nearly everyone who wanted to see it has.

Because everyone that saw Iron Man 3 realized they were duped, only went once and told others it might not be worth their time.
I would not be surprised to see Iron Man 3 drop out of the top 5 next week.

Yeah you know, beating a movie on a Thursday doesn't shock me as a stunning upset. Obviously Star Trek will be number one for the weekend and it is possible, actually pretty likely considering the cross section of fans, that Iron Man 3 ends up third behind the female leaning Gatsby. I'm not seeing the upset here.

My prediction for weekend of 5/24-26:
1- Star Trek
2- Hangover 3
3- Fast and Furious
4- The Great Gatsby
5- Epic

Did anybody read the article?

It wasn't Star Trek that beat Iron Man, it was Gatsby.
CavEl
CavEl - 5/16/2013, 10:22 AM
So Star Trek will open at number 1, Gatsby will maintain # 2 and Iron Man will drop to #3.

Iron Man will hit 1 billion by Sunday, but it won't beat either TDK or Rises.

Not surprised Iron Man 3 sucks.

"a stunning box office upset for the ages." Please, Iron Man 3 just pulled off the greatest con job in CBM history.

Why would a movie exec. find this shocking? 'Gatsby' has only been a few hundred thousand behind 'IM3' in all of the work day totals for it's entire run. 'IM3' skews a lot younger than 'Gatsby', hence it does stronger business when school's out... For instance, last Friday, 'Gatsby' grossed only $300k less than 'IM3', yet when the full weekend was totaled, 'IM3' came out more than $20m ahead of Gatsby. 'Iron Man 3' crushes it on the weekends.

So yes, with 'Star Trek' around to bleed off a few hundred thousand from 'IM3's Wednesday totals, it's pretty obvious 'Gatsby' would make the leap to #1.

IM3 has exhausted it's potential financial coffers. I mean if the movie follows the usual 50-60% weekly weekend drop, then on domestic weekend monies alone, IM3 will get near $1.1 billion (excluding international and weekday sales) over this summer. This weekend will probably be about $20-30 mill, next week $10-15 mill and so on. But like someone else said, just about everyone who was gonna see this movie has seen it. So Great Gatsby, which just came out, taking top spot for a day can't be that surprising; nor should Star Trek's impending success (Unless this was Avengers or Avatar we were talking about).

@ Chewtoy - But Iron Man and Star Trek are going to compete for the sane audiences, Gatsby might pull an upset.

@CavEl I may not beat TDKR but it's very possible it can beat TDK.

Star Trek into darkness was a brilliant movie. It is truly great.

Much better than Iron Man 3 imo.

"If Star Trek opened last week, IM3 would have been number 2."

If Star Trek opened two weeks ago, IM3 would have been number 1...And it still would be getting a Billion.

IM3 will be joining the one billion dollar club.

Phase 2 baby!!!

@MrMartinMarvel
Why was everyone so excited for "The Great Gatsby"?

That is exactly what I have been asking myself about Iron Crap 3. I mean didn't anybody see Iron Crap 2?

Kingdork
Kingdork - 5/16/2013, 10:42 AM
Real trekkies will feel raped watching Into Darkness the same way some Iron Man fans felt raped with the Mandarin in IM3. Still the movie will please general audiences and bring in the money.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 5/16/2013, 10:42 AM

@CavEl: Um... IM3 is going to pass TDK this very weekend without a doubt... if not before then. It may even pass TDKR this weekend as well, but regardless that one is inevitable too.

Edit: Unless you're just speaking of domestic grosses only... I believe you're correct there, IM3 will not overtake either Bat films here in the states.

When r u gonna Understand that worldwide box office does not determine how much a movie makes; how much do you think the chinese gouberment well keep to let marvel show their movie in China? More than 66% of actual tickets sales, the important box office is in North América, because that is 100% income to the studio, and in North América the movie has not made more than IM2 and it plumbed more than 50%!after openning weekend, marvel knew this before hand, that is y the movie oponed before overseas. Sorry guys IM3 failed expectations big time

brazilianbatman - 5/16/2013, 10:47 AM
like I said before. iron man 3 will make over 400 millions in the usa and 1.2 billion worldwide. it will be the fifth highest grossing movie of all time behind only harry potter 8(I don't remember the title), avengers, titanic and avatar.

it will beat both tdk and tdkr, they only made a 1 billion. however Its not beating tdk in usa but it could beat tdkr.

rocky - 5/16/2013, 10:47 AM
Yeah IM3 how shameful to drop to #2 mostly because it lost most of its I-Max screens and some 3D screens to Star Trek

Please the movie has done its job, they could pull it right now and it would still be considered a huge success but no Marvel will let it collect another 100million just for fun

@kenjim152 yes, worldwide BO DOES count or determine how much a movie makes.lol
