But it wasn't Star Trek Into Darkness that beat the Marvel Studios movie! Instead, The Great Gatsby caused what has been described as "a stunning box office upset for the ages" by taking #1 yesterday. Hit the jump for a whole host of updates!
J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness started off strong at the North American box office with an estimated total of $3.25 million taken from late show pre-midnight screenings and the actual midnight showings in the early hours of Thursday morning. The majority (£2 million) came from the sequel's early IMAX 3D release, while approximately $1.25 million of that was specifically from the midnight showings. With a budget of $190 million, it's thought that Star Trek Into Darkness will gross between $80 - 100 million by close of business on Sunday. Internationally, it has taken upwards of $40 million so far. In other box office news, The Great Gatsby managed to become the #1 movie in America yesterday by beating Iron Man 3 in what was described by one studio exec as, "a stunning box office upset for the ages." However, bear in mind that Iron Man 3 has been open for weeks and lost ticket sales to Star Trek Into Darkness. Its current worldwide cume is $990.5M.
