JJ Abrams Preparing to Direct Star Trek 2, Film Delayed

Deadline an exclusive report that J.J. Abrams will be stepping behind the camera to direct the sequel to his 2009 film, Star Trek, but that the film will be delayed to either the end of 2012 or the summer of 2013. G.I. Joe 2 will get Trek's original release date of June 29, 2012.

While it isn't a done deal in terms of Abrams as director, the site does note, "Abrams has just returned from vacation and is hunkering down with writers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to work on the Trek script and beginning prep for a Trek sequel that will likely begin production in January... Abrams hasn't formally committed and hasn't approved a script yet, but the studio has exercised its option on the cast and they will be ready when Abrams is."

The story goes on to state that the shift in Trek production schedule will mean a delay for Chris Pine's reboot of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan adventures.

If Star Trek gets delayed until 2013, that would mean four years between films -- that's like half a century in Hollywood years!
