Kate Mulgrew Wants Star Trek: Voyager Movie

The actress played Captain Kathryn Janeway, the first female to take the lead in a Star Trek television series. She sat down with Daily Dragon for an interview where she discusses her desire to see her show make the leap to film.

DD: When you did your Captains interview with William Shatner, what did you take away from that experience? Any new thoughts on Star Trek or your performance as Captain Janeway?

KM: My greatest thought was that we really must break the glass ceiling here in Star Trek. It’s not enough that I was the first female captain. There needs to be a continual push to open the door for women in positions of authority. In an absolutely equal way, of course. In talking to Bill I thought: This has been very much a boy’s club for a long, long time. I had the privilege and honor to be the first female, but that’s an establishment that needs now to be developed.

DD: With the reboot happening in movies, do you have any insights on what’s down the line with Star Trek? Do you think we’ll see characters from Voyager and the other next gen shows but with different backgrounds?

KM: They’ve worked long and hard for the past few years on the prequel notion. But I think they should go on and develop what happens to the characters after Voyager landed. In a movie.

DD: Yes, in a movie! Because there were books, but I say that’s not enough.

KM: Thank you very much, madam! [laughter] I’m glad you agree.

For anyone not familiar, or has forgotten, the show began with the Voyager pursuing another ship, the Maquis. Their mission is to capture the Maquis, but an event takes place that transports both ships 75,000 light years from federation space. Basically they get knocked way the hell out there in space and it is expected that it will take them 70 years to get back home. So the crews of the displaced ships merge and begin their journey. Of course along the way they encounter enemies, new and old.

The series was on for seven years and concluded with the crew actually getting home. They were able to knock off decades from their journey with a variation of solutions, such as upgrades in technology, and mind powered bumps.

The show is best known for Jeri Ryan who played a human who was turned into a borg as a child, named, Seven of Nine. She is freed by the Voyager crew and is learning about her humanity. Basically a ripoff of data, but she had a better figure then Brent Spiner so it was okay.

Would I like to see this show become a movie? Actually yes I'd be okay with it, BUT I don't want to see the same actors. I always liked the plot behind the show, but I'm not interested in seeing the original crew comeback.
