Star Trek - The New Frontier

Star Trek - The New Frontier

A sequel that is a prequel? I never thought it possible.

In time that Star Trek is at an edge. Teetering in and out of popularity, comes Star Trek (The re-boot). I am sitting there at the end of the movie in shock. I'm wowed but kinda hurt and confused.
I am a core Star Trek fan. Notice I didn't say hard core. I have seen every episode and I do collect paraphernalia, but I don't visit conventions or dress up. I try to be the fan that non Star Trek fans can relate to.
With that being said, this movie blew me away, but it was out of cannon. It took some thinking to put the pieces together. I noticed that Pike was the 1st Captain and not April. I knew the Enterprise was supposed to be formed in San Fransisco. There are other things that I don't want to divulge because I would be giving too much away.
I am a big fan of canon and hate when people mess things up. At first I'm thinking that they really messed this up, but then I started realizing that they rebooted the series. It was actually true to form because Spock and Nero went back in time and messed up the time line. I was relieved that all the pieces did indeed fit into the puzzle. They had avoided mistakes by changing the time line. Other than talking to old Spock and Nero they didn't have to be careful. They were free to do pretty much what they wanted to and be as creative as they wanted to be with out compromising 40 plus years of Star Trek.
Then I started thinking about the fact that everything after Star Trek Enterprise now was irrelevant. Now I get upset again. I am thinking about how my favorite series, Next Gen, was now irrelevant and never happened. But then I realize that it had to happen. If the events of the other time-line didn't happen then these events wouldn't have lead to this happening. So this is actually a sequel.
Even though it is earlier in time it is actually after everything in the past happened and those events caused this to happen, confusing, right? You have to see it to understand it. On top of that now Next Gen, Voyager, and DS9 could go in any direction,(maybe Dax or Tasha don't die now), so on a so forth.. Now in your imagination you can decide to have the characters go on to whatever you want them to.
Now in this movie franchise they could do anything. I can enjoy the film and not have to worry about it being canonical. Too many directors swerve and me being a tad O.C.D. I get really messed up. I like things to fit and make sense. I can now watch the movie and enjoy it, I am going to really enjoy watching any sequels and see if they will fix the time-line or leave it and leave the door open to any sequels or series.
The movie was heart pounding. The effects were second to none. I loved watching the similarities to both time lines and the differences. The acting was stupendous. When all was said and done I thought this was the best Star Trek film since First Contact. Anyone who is a Star Trek fan will love this movie once they can get the pieces put together. Anyone who is not a Star Trek fan will gasp at the intensity and I believe this movie will ignite the Star in Star Trek once again. I think we'll see a whole new interest in the franchise. Maybe now it won't be so nerdy to be a Trekkie. Not that it matters to us that are, but now there will be new Trekkies that won't even see it coming.
