Star Trek 2 Will Be "Inspired" By Cowboys And Aliens

According to Roberto Orci(one half of the writing duo with partner Alex Kurtzman) the story for their Star Trek sequel will take influence from John Favreau's upcoming sci-fi/western CBM..

Plot details on the highly anticipated sequel to JJ Abrahms' Star Trek reboot have been kept tightly under wraps thus far. But although the script isn't even complete yet, writer Robert Orci reveals that the sequel will remain immensely loyal to the original canon and bring the series back to the very origins of the franchise. To illustrate his point he references another movie by John Favreau(on which Orci is also on script duties for) that is getting excitement building among fans..

"['Cowboys and Aliens'] inspires it a little bit," Orci said. "'Star Trek' was 'Wagon Train [to] the Stars.' Isnt that how Gene Roddenberry pitched it? So right now were just doing 'Stars Come to the Wagon Train' and now we start turning. Once we start relaxing about what were doing here, Im hoping that being out in the woods a little bit will kind of inspire the right decisions hopefully."

He also reveals that he and Kurtzman are about half way through the script, but that nothing is set in stone and things still sound subject to change..

"Id say were halfway through the story," Orci said. "Halfway through all of us going back over what weve talked about and seeing if it really sticks. Weve built a little Jenga castle storywise, and now were going to go pick at it and pull at it and if it stays standing. We know what we have."

Well, lets hope they get this thing moving sooner rather than later. Star Trek was a definite and surprising movie highlight for me and many others. I'm looking forward to seeing what these great writers and director can deliver next.

Growing up I used to love to come home from school and watch Star Trek episodes re-run in the afternoon. To this day I will still stop what I am doing and sit down and watch a Star Trek episode even though I’ve seen each one dozens of times.

I was unsure of what this last Star Trek film was going to be like (I'm a Star Trek loyalist) but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this new version of the classic TV series. I am very much looking forward to the sequel, especially if they can find that old TV series feel that made me so happy as a kid. This is really why Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan worked so well as a movie and is still one of my top 5 sci-fi movies of all time.

CBM Bartender...drinks for all the writers, fans and cast of Star Trek.

THE FIRST ONE WAS GENIUS...THE STORY BROUGHT WHAT WE KNEW AND LOVED TO TODAY TAKING IT INTO A ALTERNATE UNIVERSE..GENIUS...WHCH MAKES A SEQUEL A HUGE UNDERTAKING, HOW DO YOU TOP IT? OR MAYBE BECAUSE OF LAYING DOWN SUCH WELL DONE GROUNDWORK..A SECOND ONE WOULD BE A BREEZE. BUT I LIKE HOW THEYRE TAKING THEIR TIME WITH IT, YOU NEED THESE TYPE MOVIES WELL THOUGHT OUT..STORY IS THE REASON MOVIES WORK..I LIKED BACK IN THE DAY HOW KIRK, YOU THINK HE WAS BEATEN BUT ACTUALLY HAD THE UPPER HAND THE WHOLE TIME, KIRK IS BAD ASS.

SeeyouAnnetea-- He's saying the original star trek series was like a western pioneer film in space. The enterprise being akin to a group of people in a wagon train. They can only use what they brought with them and what they find along the way. They also have to rely on each other to survive. He's saying the next film will be possibly more like that.

..."the sequel will remain immensely loyal to the original canon and bring the series back to the very origins of the franchise."

I'm a little surprised at this statement considering how far the first movie veered away from original canon. Are they going to reboot their own reboot?

@Super, he ddi nt say that he was using the same ideas as cowboys and Aliens, By getting back to the roots I am assuming that its going to have to do with the Romulans or the Kilingons and meeting new and Hostile aliens.
The Trek Crew are the Cowboys and the kilingons and romulans are the aliens(of course)

@Knightstalker
the first movie didnt veer away from the canon, the rules of Roddenberry's universe, in any way. it was and is an alt timeline, it is a very new and unique way to reboot the franchise and it stayed very true to the canon just like the 5 tv series had different stories but all were set in the same Roddenberry universe.

while i am glad they are taking their time to do the the sequel right, i cant wait for it to be releashed, just wish they would have started working on it sooner.

Oh what the hell, your kidding me right? Iam fully aware of Wagon Train. But Cowboys & Aliens. Lets get back to what Star Trek is about stopping destroying the main time line. All I hear is how JJ breath new life into ST. He could of did something totally new with the main time line!

Even though I enjoyed the movie, the plot of Star Trek was a joke. It was a weak idea brilliantly executed.
I personally think Orci & Kurtz are hack's, not one thing they have written stands up as a well thought out story. They got lucky by getting some high profile stuff, that's it. The worst thing they did was having Old Spock destroy 200 years of history for the worse, being responsible for the death of billions of his people and not try at all to make amends or correct the timeline.

First one sucked (just like ALL of Kurtzman & Orci's films). My interest isn't what you would call "piqued" for its sequel.

THEY DID AN AWESOME JOB WITH THE REBOOT, WITH THE GENERATIONS OF HARDCORE FANS, ITS THE BEST THEY COULD DO AND I THINK THEY DID WELL..
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 2/24/2011, 8:03 AM
It wasn't the best they could do. Spock and CookieDodger seem to have the right idea. There are so many stories from the original timeline that could have been told, but instead they had to have a love affair between Uhura and Spock of all people, and destroying Vulcan was stupid. I think they've backed themselves into a corner now as far as this new continuity.
Cookiedodger
Cookiedodger - 2/24/2011, 8:27 AM
With some simple changes to the plot, they could have had almost the same movie, but they wouldn't have crapped all over the cannon. Instead of Nemo being a disgruntled miner (stupid), He could have been a 23-24th Century faction leader of the Romulan temporal cold war mentioned in the Enterprise series. This would have been the first shot of the temporal war, attempting to destroy the Federation's greatest warrior (Kirk) before he was born. The destruction of Vulcan would have been an attempt to weaken the federation by removing one of the two founding members. And Old Spock would have been an emissary for the federation's temporal faction, attempting to rectify the incursions.
Movie one would be almost the same, movie 2-3 or 4 would be about Kirk and crew working to undo the destruction of the last 200 years. With the temporal war as a backdrop, the writers would have been free to use members of TNG cast or TOS cast as freelance warriors conscripted to the cause. Hell, Khan could have been conscripted to be fighting on either side.
Anyways, spilt milk...Sob.
