Star Trek was okay, but not great

I've been a Star Trek fan since I was a kid. I thought the movie had some very good scenes, and I think Quinto was very good, but the movie, as a whole, didn't do much for me.

I think the story was a little uninspired--too routine. Romulans? Time travel? The Earth in danger of total destruction? I don't know, I feel like we've "been there, done that" (several times). And the sequel is going to be about an alternate timeline? I think the time travel/alternate dimension stuff is being overdone. How about visiting a strange new planet and boldly going where no man has gone before?

It’s “reviews” like this that make me glad that I am not in the movie making business.
So the “…story was a little uninspired—too routine”? We are discussing a franchise that spans 29 seasons on television and 10 feature films (not counting animated titles). How would you make an original movie with a franchise that has such a rich history?
What I would do is exactly what was done. Reboot. Granted that many of the reboots that have been done and are planned attempt to only make money for a near dead franchise, but in this case it was done well.
You say “How about visiting a strange new planet and boldly going where no man has gone before?” Been done. When has an alternate universe been used? Not just visited, but becoming the mainstream Star Trek Universe where every story is a new one? I can’t wait to find out what is going to be done with the classic Star Trek characters (Kahn anyone?) and classic races (maybe a Borg that assimilates for religious reasons).
Thanks for your time.
