BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: TFA May Become The Highest Grossing Movie Ever With $3 Billion

We've had a lot of very interesting box office updates on Star Wars: The Force Awakens since Friday, but this might just be the most exciting yet! According to box office analysts, it appears as if the movie is indeed going to beat the worldwide haul taken by Avatar in 2009...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened even bigger than expected this weekend, and it's quickly become evident that strong word of mouth is ensuring that the movie will have a lot of staying power at the worldwide box office (despite some initially predicting that it would be very top heavy, with the majority seeing it in the first few days, only for ticket sales to then plummet). Now, word comes via The Wrap that the J.J. Abrams helmed release is indeed the first real contender for the current $2.7 billion record held by Avatar, news which should make a lot of you very happy!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made $610 million in four days, and the trade seems confident that its success up until this point is a strong indication that it will have no problem becoming the highest grossing release of all-time. Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's senior box office tracker has even gone as far as to say, "Are we looking at the first $3 billion movie ever? I think we could be." Big things are also expected for next weekend, with Exhibitor Relations's Jeff Bock stating: "I could certainly see it landing north of $200 million this weekend. This is all uncharted territory, but you look at what ‘Avatar’ and ‘Titanic’ did in their second weekends and you have think, why not? This was a unique situation with so many people wanting it to be better than the prequels, and it delivered, and these numbers were the result. I don’t see anything topping this, not even ‘VIII."

So, it looks like we'll have a new record holder, though nothing is set in stone just yet. For now though, it looks like Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to become the new box office king...

I said from the start that all I wanted was for it to be better than the prequels,no modern Star Wars movie is gonna be better than the original trilogy.

I would love to be proven wrong but I just can't see it happening.

Frozen called it, Jollem called it, I [frick]ing called it.

Haters gonna hate, the release of this movie shut them up (financially and in cinematic quality), and I finally have the first good star wars movie since 1983. I'm happy as [frick] right now.

3 billion?! I've definitely contributed $100 to the box office though

And even if it does scratch near the surface of Avatar, we also have to consider the small amount of increase in IMAX/3D ticket sales.

Well, as of this morning, it was sitting on $610+ million after 4 days and Thursday night. That's an average of $115+ million a day (not adding Thursday in to Friday). That is ridiculously [frick]ing insane, and gives the movie a CHANCE to make it's first billion in one week world-wide... without China in the market. This is almost without a doubt going to cross the 2 billion mark. I could see where it would be a strong contender to hit $3B.

Still good to hear though, I know Paramount is crying their eyes out with Abrams gone. :(

Jesus 3 billion from one movie. Disney are just rolling in cash from Marvel and now Star Wars.

Yea, I'm not so sure about that. We'll have to wait until it hits 1 billion.

It has to make 3.5 billion to beat Gone with the wind. Unless inflation is taken into account the record is meaningless. Twenty years from now when tickets are $40 a movie will make a billion in a weekend.

The real question is, how much will Avatar 2 make?
How about 3 and 4?
I suspect a bit of diminishing returns for that franchise.

Avatar is an anomaly. I don't think its own sequels can outdo it, even more so since the clock is ticking and its already late in the day.

Long as STAR WARS is back and kicking ass and decimating the box office, I'm fine.

Taste pretty damn sweet.

It has been crazy. I've already seen it twice but my little sister came into town for Christmas and wanted to see it so we tried to get tickets for today last night but every showtime until 9:30pm were already sold out. So in short I'll be seeing it a third time in three short hours.

@HavocPrime

Don't forget Pixar. Pixar made over $1B this year with Inside Out and Good Dinosaur.
