BOX OFFICE: STAR WARS: TFA Tops AVATAR To Become America's #1 Movie

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made box office history in just TWENTY days by becoming the highest grossing release of all-time in North America, crushing Avatar. Hit the jump for details on that and to find out whether it will achieve the same feat worldwide...

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made history today by passing the domestic haul of Avatar. The J.J. Abrams helmed release currently has a total of $758.2 million, but will pass that movie's $760.5 million record later today. It took months for James Cameron's 3D epic to achieve that, but this return to a Galaxy Far, Far Away has done so in less than three weeks. However, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is still a long way off the $2.78 billion made by Avatar worldwide, and box office analysts have started to temper their expectations by revising predictions which now have the movie finishing its run around the $2.2 billion - $2.4 billion mark. That means it will pass Titanic to become the second highest grossing release in history, an incredible achievement, especially as it topping Avatar always seemed like something of a stretch. It's just a shame that 3D ticket sales aren't what they were back in 2009, because Star Wars: The Force Awakens would have effortlessly passed that movie's worldwide haul if that was the case. We'll have to wait and see anyway!

I know it will beat it, I just wish they wouldn't report it being #1 when it's still #2...they're reporting something that hasn't happened yet. Seems pretty stupid they can't wait till tomorrow to report the actual story.

It might not beat Avatar but it will become America's first one billion dollar grossing movie.

I think TFA had Avatar beaten already with a much better story and fun characters . It came close to WW total but if it sticks around like Avatar did it might just make it .

@Rulk

Thank god you posted that. I would've never noticed the similarities otherwise..

If they re-release it when Episode VIII comes out, then it will probably beat it. Just like when Avatar & Titanic was re-released.

I want TFA to beat Avatar, so people will shut up about Avatar, but I know people will do the same for TFA.

Episode VII - $758.2 billion

THR: Hey everyone, Star Wars beat Avatar!!!

Even though it really hasn't yet. It's like saying happy new year on the 31st instead of the 1st...it's just odd.

That's the thing though. Titanic was released 3 different times, as was Avatar.

3 separate times... How that could still be counted all as one movie is stupid. If Disney rereleased Avengers into the theater 2 more times, I bet you that it would reach Avatar's numbers.

Tremendous achievement for the TFA, but like i said, to beat that world wide total 2.7 billion of Avatar, not see that happening. Also you have to consider TFA is dropping like 40 % everyweek, and during Avatar's run, each week it rose its numbers. And you have to remember Avatar opening weekend was only 77 million.

But I believe TFA will be the first movie ever to go over 900 million domestic

You know what will be hilarious, if Avatar 2 breaks those records. Hell, I wouldn't put it past DC and Warner Bros. to possibly do the same with Batman v Superman. Let's not forget about Infinity Wars Part 1 and 2 which I'm sure Marvel and Disney will count them as one whole movie box office haul instead of two separate ones.

I expect the numbers for Episode 8 to be drastically lower. For a lot of fans the film didn't meet their expectations and realized it wasn't as great as they thought it would be.

Batman v Superman beat SW:TFA? Someone's having delusions of grandeur. Who gives a shit what Ep. VIII will do?

The ability to break every box office record is insignificant, next to the power of the force.

He does it on literally EVERY Star Wars thread. It's so sad to see someone so dedicated to constantly bash one single and minor part of a great movie.

People who think they are clever by pointing out the similarities to A New Hope confound me.

It's bloody obvious. You are not insightful. And you offer nothing else.

There's a lot to say about the creative choices in The Force Awakens, both critically and otherwise, but you're too stupid to think of anything beyond, "Look! It's like Episode IV."

Both are ok/average movies. Whatever.
