Carrie Fisher's General Leia Will Reportedly Have A Larger Role In STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

We already knew that Star Wars: Episode VIII had wrapped, but a new report indicates that the late Carrie Fisher's Leia will have a lot more to do in this movie than she did in The Force Awakens...

Fans are still reeling from the news that Carrie Fisher passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning, but it sounds like the iconic Star Wars actress will at least get a proper big-screen sendoff in the still untitled Episode VIII.

We found out back in July that the film had finished shooting (and yes, that obviously means Fisher had also completed her scenes), and we're now hearing from Deadline that General Leia is to be featured more prominently than she was in J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens.

“For Episode VIII, Leia had a larger role, we’re told, and her daughter, Billie Lourd also is in that film as well as in Force Awakens. How Lucasfilm will deal with the loss of one of the most beloved female characters in any franchise is not known, however, and the company is remaining mum.”

Lucasfilm is probably "remaining mum" because they feel there's plenty of time to address the situation and are not inclined to respond to such disrespectful inquiries.

For now, let's be content in the knowledge that we will get to spend time with Princess (to us, she'll always be royalty) Leia one last time, and that Miss Fisher's final screen performance will no doubt be one to remember.

Thank you @RorMachine. Lol.

Amazing how manners and respect have been thrown out the window for some.

Looking forward to seeing her and giving her a proper goodbye. This will be very special. Hopefully they do right by her and wrap things up in a way that makes sense.

I want an animated show that takes place after Return of the Jedi and focuses on the main trio. They fight Thrawn. They meet Ahsoka. Leia gets a lightsaber. I love Rebels but I feel like the post-Jedi era has more potential for story.

@InfinitePunches - I think we are defiently getting a post-jedi series in the future. But it will be after the this new sequel trilogy is over. They wont want to spoil aspects of the new trilogy from a show.

I would love for Ahsoka to show up in the later trilogy (we dont kno her species lifespan, she could live for hundreds of years an still remain "young" looking). If anything I want her to interact with Maz Kanata in any medi (comic, book, series); I would be great to see two non-jedi force users interact.

As for Leia. She never embraces the full potential of her force abilties. We will never see her weild a lightsaber in a Jedi sense (we do see her use one in the Star Wars comic though). She explain in book like aftermath +bloodline that, though she is connected to the force (as in can feel living beings) she never embraces it actively.

While I understand that people may want the film's original vision to play out as was intended (IF Leia was meant to survive), but that's simply not going to happen.

Leia will die in episode VIII. The character is so synonymous with the actress in this regard, to have anyone else portray her would feel wrong to so many. It's not a matter of being sensitive so much as respecting the legacy of the actress and her character.

@MattBellissimo - While I am inclined to agree with you... she doesnt have to die in VIII at all. She could die in the beginnning action of IX. IX could start with a giant space battle already in progress and they could have her die there. Maybe CGI her in jjust a little bit like they did in Rogue one.
this does not necessarily HAVE to effect VIII at all

@MattBellissimo - You sound so sure of this.

They've already shown that they are willing to CGI actors back into the movies. Leia was apparently supposed to be in Episode 9 from what I've read.

I don't think there is anything wrong with CGI'ing her in. She signed on for it and WANTED to do it. It wouldn't be disrespectful until they start shoving a CGI version of her into movies she didn't agree to do.

@CorndogBurglar - It doesn't matter if YOU think it's wrong, right, or anything in between.

Obviously nothing is ever 100%. In this case, it seems to be about a 99% given the circumstance. With this being Carrie's last performance, her time as the character so widely praised and remembered, I am certain Lucasfilm and co. will make this her swan song.

They are not about to recreate the woman digitally two years after her death. It just won't happen.
