DEADPOOL 3 Director Shawn Levy On Planned STAR WARS Movie And Potential Ben Solo/Kylo Ren Return

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy has shared an update on his untitled Star Wars movie, and while he doesn't give any plot details away, he does comment on a recent rumor about Adam Driver's potential return.

Last November, we got word that Shawn Levy (Real Steel, The Adam Project Stranger Things) was in line to direct a new Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. No other details were revealed at the time and updates have been few and far between since, but the filmmaker has now confirmed that the project is still in development.

During an interview with Variety, Levy said that he's planning to start working on the film shortly after he finishes production on Deadpool 3, but the Hollywood strikes have slowed progress considerably.

Levy remained tight-kipped when it came to plot details, but he did note that Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy made it clear that he would have the creative freedom to make the kind of Star Wars movie he wanted.

"When Kathy Kennedy brought me on board to make a Star Wars movie, her central mandate to me was 'I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies — with a Star Wars story.' So I have felt extremely empowered. We are in early days, unfortunately, because the development process was abruptly paused [due to the WGA strike], but I feel very empowered to trust my instincts in the development of this story and movie."

One rumor that did the rounds earlier this year claimed that Levy's film would feature Adam Driver's Ben Solo, aka Kylo Ren, either in a prequel to the most recent trilogy or a story set afterwards (Ben died at the end of The Rise of Skywalker, but it wouldn't be the first time we saw a supposedly deceased character return in the galaxy far, far away).

Nobody really put much stock in the rumor at the time, but when quizzed about it, Levy didn't debunk anything!

"As you know Adam is a buddy, and I’ve always been a huge fan of Kylo Ren. But no comment."

Levy was also asked if Deadpool 3 has been "good practice" for Star Wars, and the director responded by saying both his MCU threequel and mysterious Star Wars project are progressing exactly as he envisioned.

"The experience that I’m currently having with Marvel on Deadpool is showing me first-hand that it is indeed really possible to feel empowered and personal about making a movie within a universe that is bigger than any one film. My Deadpool movie is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off. So I’m going into the development of my Star Wars movie with a similar optimism, and faith that my instincts will be allowed to lead the way."

Expect updates on both projects shortly after the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end.

Would love to see his character get some redemption. Maybe see his time as Kylo ren? Or maybe have him be apart of the WBW and maybe fight his way back to the modern era?

@Mrnorth1921 - I loved the small tease of Kylo's redemption arc in the last film and I've been waiting for it to fully flesh out and we see Ben become the next Skywalker hero in the SW universe. Likewise Rey should be taken to the dark side.

@sully - Rey is too far from becoming dark. But who knows? She has been alone for 15 years in her new movie. A lot can happen during that time. She might be more hardened and maybe depressed.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - he was the best character of the new trilogy. People gave Hayden redemption. These new characters can be fleshed out or be brought into a better light to Star Wars fans.

@Mrnorth1921 - Everyone wanted to see Anakin's origin/downfall though, not a crappy adaptation of Jacen Solo.

@soberchimera - and the reception at the time was poor. I don’t know if you were alive then or too young to remember it. But people hated Hayden and Anakin’s story. I remember people pretended that Anakin and Vader were two other people.

@Mrnorth1921 - Revenge of the Sith was much more warmly received than the previous two installments, plus the prequel trilogy resulted in 2 excellent animated series depicting the Clone Wars which streamlined Anakin's story and gave him much more character development.

@soberchimera - it was made into a series because Lucas wanted money. lol. Without that show. Anakin or Hayden would be hated still. Clone wars had nothing to do with him. However with him coming back for the shows and saying “snips”. People are reminded of the show. But his version of Anakin was the one who was crying every ten mins. And hated sand.

And the sequels made more money than the prequels. And 7 and 8 are more critically loved than the prequels. The problem is that Star Wars fans rightfully and most of the time, wrongly targeted any new property. They did this with the prequels. Then when the sequels came out. They did it then. Now they are targeting the shows. Nothing will ever be as good as the nostalgia presented from the originals.

That said, the sequels can’t get any worse. And like the prequels, they deserve some redemption with further content fleshing them out. Ben solos or Kylo ren is one of that content. But after this and the Rey movie. They just do a time jump. A hundred years later. And start fresh. No skywalkers. No Ahsoka’s. No boba fett. No Palpatines. Just maybe an older Grogu and a whole list of brand new characters.

The guy was a short lived hot commodity when he was cast.

He was never right for Star Wars to begin with. Otherwise he's a pretty damn good actor.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Because Ben Solo was the only good thing about that series and he is the last Skywalker

Ben Solo returning and his redemption is the only thing that peaks my interest in the Disney trilogy. Otherwise, skip a few hundred years and hire writers who have imaginations and dont just recycle shit. I'd just hire people who worked on EU stuff to write than these hacks who grew up watching Gilmore Girls and Big Bang Theory

@EnergyVamp - now that they introduced the far away galaxy, they don't even have to do a significant timejump. Rather see them movie the story there

I would love to see a Kylo Ren (prequel) set after he turns to the Dark side but prior to him officially becoming Kylo Ren.

Man Driver was the mvp of the sequel trilogy. Also he had the best John Williams themes whether it was dark side Kylo or light side Ben suites

"I want a Shawn Levy movie. I want a story and a tone that reflects you and your taste and what you bring to your movies"

Although I do enjoy his movies, I don't really know what his style is. Think he fits better for a tvshow, just like Kylk Ren.

But anyway, I don't see his movie getting made. Think he and Taiks Waititi will join the long list of directors that neither got their movies made.

Kylo was the only interesting thing about Kennedy's Star wars and that's solely because of Adam being the one Driving the character. I don't see Kylo getting a spin off for two reasons, he's white and he's male and that's a big no no for Kennedy, unless there's a way to change his origin by giving him a group of jedi friends who are of course mostly female and reflect all the colours of the rainbow, I just don't see it happening.
