Ron Howard On Why He's Turned Down The Chance To Direct Superhero Movies

Did you know George Lucas approached Ron Howard to helm Star Wars: The Phantom Menace? Well, that's not the only geek-friendly project the In The Heart Of The Sea director turned down. Find out why Howard doesn't feel he's a good fit for superhero flicks after the jump...

Director Ron Howard has dabbled in sci-fi and fantasy with the likes of Cocoon, Willow and Splash, but over the course of his illustrious career he's yet to take the helm of a comic book/superhero movie - and it's not because he hasn't had the opportunity.

During his appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Howard revealed that he'd been approached by George Lucas do direct Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace - along with Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, incidentally - but managed to convince him that he was the only man for the job (thanks for that, Ron). The talk then turned to superhero movies, and Howard explained whey he turned down the chance to direct some of 'em, without naming names.

"I’ve had opportunities over the years [to make superhero movies]. I really feel like you shouldn’t make a movie as a kind of exercise. You have to be all the way in. I was never a comic book guy. I like the movies when I see them, especially the origin stories. I never felt like I could be on the set, at 3 o’clock in the morning, tired, with 10 important decisions to make, and know, intuitively, what the story needs. For me, I’d be copycatting and not inventing. I’ve never said yes to one."

Guess it's just not every director's dream to play in the superhero sandbox. Would you have liked to see a Ron Howard CBM? If so, which characters? Sound off below, and let us know which movies you think he might have said no to while you're at it.

Is it because of the death threats he'll get if he screws up any small aspect of the film?

Good for him. The genre is not for everyone and he literally has his choice of opportunities. Ran into him over several years ago when he was in Toronto. Down to earth guy and zero attitude. Took the time to chat with my niece who was only 5 years old at the time

I can respect a guy who says "That's not really my thing" without badmouthing it or being condescending.

I appreciate that. If you aren't passionate about it then there will be people who are that will bring more to the table.

Still think he would've been a great choice to direct Thor: Ragnarok.

Maybe Howard & Hemsworth will reunite again for Thor 4 after Infinity War part 2.

Ron's worth $140 Million... I don't think money factors into his creative decisions.

If only every director thought like Howard, then we'd have a lot more great Superhero movies! It's when someone doesn't truly understand the material that we get crap...

...sorry - had to clear my throat there...

Totally respect the guy and his work and he's been around forever so props to that as well. But there are some superhero movies where you don't really have to be a comic book guy to do. Yes, you need to have the flavor of the way a comic story is set up and the nuances but in the end, it's just like any other heroic adventure story. I mean Willow had grand heroes and larger than life villains and even monsters and wizards. It's not THAT different than some comic book tales.

But I think it's great that he sees his own limited interest in the subject and decided that would not help out the movie he was offered.

@Gusto - "Translation:
Opie Cunningham hates comic books!!!"

Reminds me of one of Arrested Development's great meta jokes.

Jessie, the Bluth's new PR rep., calls George Michael "Opie" in a negative way, so Ron Howard, the show's narrator, delivers the hilarious line, "Jessie had gone too far, and had best watch her mouth."

Like almost everything with Arrested Development, this scene from that episode is great & hilarious. Plus, Jessie is easy on the eyes.
