Solo: A Star Wars Story featured a truly awesome surprise when Darth Maul was revealed to be the leader of Crimson Dawn. What, if any, future he now has on the big screen remains to be seen but a Solo sequel seems unlikely so we'll have to hope he shows up in either Boba Fett or Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The last time we saw Maul on the big screen was in The Phantom Menace but he's since shown up in both The Clone Wars and Rebels, two animated series which revealed how he came back to life.

Now, director Ron Howard has shed some light on what led to the villain showing up in his movie.

"I will say that was scripted and there was a lot of uncertainty as to who that character would be. So it was sort of initially written in a rather generic way. It just sort of said “Boss”.  And I thought when I came in, I assumed they knew who it was and they were just keeping it under wraps. And they didn’t. But Maul was listed as one of the candidates. And I lobbied hard for that. I thought that made a lot of sense to me. I found that character to be really effective. And I knew for a fact, without asking directly and giving anything away, my son Reed who just turned 31, who’s a dedicated Star Wars fan, he’s a golfer.  He’s not in the business. Dedicated Star Wars fan.

"I just whispered that possibility and he just thought that would be incredibly cool.  And so for that generation, I thought, well that was gonna be a pretty interesting idea.  And doing a little more research and understanding sort of how the character had worked elsewhere, I thought it was good.  And the Kasdan’s were on board with that.  And but then we actually shot it twice.  Because we did it once.  And then we realized we, it wasn’t quite Maul enough yet."

So, what about the scene needed to change in order to make it more Maul-ish? "[We] added the lightsaber. And intensified it.  And definitely took a big jump," he reveals. It's kind of crazy to think that the scene didn't originally include the lightsaber and it's fair to say that altering it slightly was definitely the right move. What do you guys think? Let us know your thoughts in the usual place.

Cameo was good, nothing great, i guess we should not hope for a Vader scene a la RO in every prequel movie...

But...maybe just a Sith Lord. :P

I feel nothing tho, especially if they intend to keep Rebels canon.
If they intend to use Maul in the Obi Wan movie, and have a proper duel then i'm all ears tho.

@Doomsday8888 - After that cameo i think i can see the path they are following for a Kenobi movie: Jabba receives the order by Maul to give a suicidal mission to Han, who has a medium-small part in the movie. It could involve some stuff to do for Obi-wan on Dathomir (In Rebels we see that in the Nightsister cave there is a Satine sanctuary, is it him that made it?)Han is sent there and he takes some stuff for Jabba (maybe dathomirian artifacts? Thrawn is interested and pursue him? This could be a nice way to throw him in.) and then he drops it because of the empire.

Kenobi and Han obviously never directly met, or Obi-wan acknowledges him and then plan to find him again if needed (that would be so Obi-Wan!).

After that Obi-Wan and Maul have a fight where Maul thinks Kenobi dies, but not in a satisfactory way. Kenobi deliberately fakes his death (like Ahsoka) and that's the reason in rebels says something like "he's a tenacious enemy".

It could serve both as a Solo sequel and a Kenobi movie, but i see that it is more like a plot for TWO stories, not just one.

I mean, YOUR ideas sure sound interesting to me.
Dunno if they will follow that path tho.

@Doomsday8888 - They should just have obi wan fight krayt dragon. A jedi who abandoned the order and leads a group of the tuskin raiders. Close enough to a sif.

Well, i can't imagine who they considered beside him. An evil criminal boss? He is the only reasonable choice, if you want to choose someone from the lore.

Hondo Ohnaka would have nice too see, but i can't see him as a ruthless and shady boss. Jabba would have been nonsense and boring, since he is already part of the Hutt cartel and therefore one of the 5 syndicates.

I really can't see anybody else as that "Boss" character, they made the most reasonable and appropriate choice.

@FrankieDedo - Prince Xizor, head of the all-powerful Black Sun crime syndicate during that era in the old EU. Would have introduced a powerful new character who could be used in the future, let die-hard fans know their old favorites haven’t been forgotten, and had the casuals who haven’t seen the Clone Wars or Rebels going “Woah, who is this guy?!” instead of “Wait, didn’t he get cut in half back in Episode 1? How is he still alive? This makes no sense.”

FrankieDedo - 5/31/2018, 4:13 AM
@EarlChai - Yes, i thought about it, and it would have been a super nice way of reintroducing him, but i think they always thought about someone already established in the new canon.

Actually, i would have put Xizor in the place of Dryden Vos! The Black Sun is under Maul's control as far as we know, so it would have made sense.

@FrankieDedo - True, Maul’s established, but there’s not really anywhere the movies can go with him. Obviously he won’t be in Episode 9, and anything we would have seen with him in the still-unconfirmed Obi-Wan film was already covered in Rebels. Feels like they just did it for the shock value—and to make the cartoon fans feel special—instead of story reasons.

I liked it. And the fact they got Ray Park back to you lay him in the (Motion Capture) flesh was great. I think Solo May have been the most enjoyable of the new films, for me. Force Awakens was great because it was episode 7 and no one can deny loving seeing Han and Chewie on the Falcon again. Rogue One was good. I have found myself watching it occasionally and while the beginning is a little slow, the third act saves the movie and shoots it to great status. I hate Last Jedi when I first watched it, but it is growing on me. I will say though even though I’ve come to enjoy Last Jedi, I don’t respect Rian Johnson. The documentary on the Blu-Ray showed me his attitude I feel and I didn’t care for him much. And finally, Solo. I’ve seen it twice and enjoyed it more than the others. It was fun. More fun than Lst Jedi for sure. I’m actually hoping for sequels to this. I want to see what is to become of Crimson Dawn and Qi’Ra, see Han and Chewie meet Jabba and Boba, etc. This time, let’s just get Ron Howard for the whole movie.

It just felt unneeded to me. We almost went a whole movie without a lightsaber, even a mention of the force - and that was fitting since Han was a sceptic on the subject in ANH. Hearing that it was almost somebody else, I think I would've preferred that.

I said to my dad after we left the cinema "Do you think they only made him get his lightsaber out to confirm that it is Maul?" Because he just got it out, turned it on, turned it off - maybe it was a threat to Qi'ra? We're not that dumb, it's pretty clear. I sat up and turned to my dad as soon as I heard Sam Witwer's voice. It would've been cool if they'd have kept him hooded the whole time.

And when I think Maul, I absolutely do not think crime-boss.

@Nebula - I think you are bit late on that last point. He has been a crime lord since the clone wars ("we are lords....CRIME lords") he even nearly set up a massive crime planet that made palpatine wary.
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 5/31/2018, 3:54 AM
@Nebula - Eh i guess. But they pointed out his metal legs for instance. I think if they go forward with him it will say "this is the way he is now".
CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 5/31/2018, 4:00 AM
@Nebula - Yeah but its been like 40 years. And he isnt alone.

I mean anakin skywalker, if you never watched the original series look at him now. Palpatine aswell, or even luke in the new series. I'm just saying the big gaps can be explained more or less.

Besides this wont be like jake skywalker. Maul crime lord is way cooler than sith maul. Crimelord maul is badass, and it trully makes him unique.

@Nebula - I basically said it felt like a contractual obligation to have a sabre ignite. Literally all that cameo felt like.

Using a lightsaber to threaten someone as a hologram actually came across as odd to me. What was he gonna do with it?

But I liked the cameo itself.

Thought it was an ok cameo, left me a bit confused. I never watched the clone wars and only saw bits of it on youtube, so my knowledge was minimal. With the different shaped light saber I thought it might have been his brother?. I can only guess how more confused the average joe would have been when they saw that scene. After doing research and getting confirmation here that it was indeed Maul, it has got excited where they may take it from here.

Good job Howard. Cannot think of someone else who could've been a character with large connections to the wider star wars universe

OK, I need an explanation for something. I never watched Clone Wars or Rebels, but I do know that he's still alive on those shows and so it makes sense that he would be around when the events in this movie are taking place. One question though...

HOW THE [frick] DID HE SURVIVE THIS SHIT?

CaptainElrond
CaptainElrond - 5/31/2018, 4:07 AM
@MUTO123 - His hate for obi wan (hate fuels the darkside, darkside keeps people from dying) kept him alive long enough to make a spiderbody of the force. He survived on a junk planet for some reason till his brother found him.

Not crazy considering palpy survived a electro shock and vader got roasted.
