WARNING: SPOILERS FOR STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI
Marvel Studios is no stranger to post-credit scenes that tease future installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans of the Disney-owned studio have grown accustomed to waiting until after the credits have rolled for a sneak peek at the future of the franchise. Star Wars films haven't yet jumped on the post-credits stinger bandwagon, but with the franchise now being a Disney product, fans are naturally wondering if they should sit through the credits of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
SPOILERS!
The answer is yes, The Last Jedi does have a special post-credits moment, but it's not a teaser for the next film or anything. Rather, it's a tribute to the late Carrie Fisher, who passed away in 2016. According to CBR.com, "Carrie Fisher is given the intergalactic send off she deserves."
Getting a bit more specific, the site details:
With the eighth chapter in the Star Wars saga being her last, a touching title card appears after the first set of credits, stating “In Loving Memory of our Princess: Carrie Fisher”, a sentiment that will carry a lot of weight for those who choose to see the movie. The wording is everything.
Keep in mind, this only pertains to the post-credits tribute. I have no idea how The Last Jedi handles her character now that Carrie Fisher is no longer with us. It's been reported that Leia's story arc in The Last Jedi would remain unaltered following her passing; instead, the movies going forward would redirect their focus.
Fisher was integral to the Star Wars franchise and has been a fan-favorite since she first appeared as Princess Leia Organa in 1977's A New Hope. But fans adored her even beyond the big screen as she was a caring, hilarious, and all-around great person, so it's nice to see she will get honored in some fashion.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters December 15.
