With the release for The Force Awakens quickly approaching, there had been some recent, though unconfirmed, rumours that Disney would be retiring all of its 'Slave Leia' merchandise. The bikini-esque outfit is notorious for its revealing nature, worn by Leia during her brief stint in the captivity of Jabba the Hutt in 1983's Return of the Jedi.
The Wall Street Journal reached out to Leia herself, Carrie Fisher, for her take on the matter. Her response? "I think it's stupid." She elaborated: “The father who flipped out about it, “What am I going to tell my kid about why she’s in that outfit?” Tell them that a giant slug captured me and forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn’t like it. And then I took it off. Backstage.”
The ever-outspoken Fisher went on to discuss returning to the role of Leia in the sequel, saying she never had any doubts about accepting the role again. "I’ve been this character for 40 years, why would I not?” she said. “Because I’m going to be associated with Princess Leia more? There is no “more.” And I’m a female working in show business, where, if you’re famous, you have a career until you’re 45, maybe. Maybe. And that’s about 15 people.” Fisher said that the newest installment finds the older, wiser "General Leia" having gone through some tough experiences that make her not find everything as funny anymore.
