STAR WARS: Damon Lindelof's Movie Also Lost Its Original Lead Star When The Writer Parted Ways With Lucasfilm

Steven Knight has taken over writing duties on Damon Lindelof's Star Wars movie after the filmmaker parted ways with Lucasfilm, but it sounds like when he left, so did the upcoming project's original lead.

Star Wars Celebration saw Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy make a number of big announcements about the franchise's future in theaters, but fans have become wise to that in recent years. After all, the executive has made promises which haven't been kept on several occasions now, with Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron perhaps the most noteworthy example.

James Mangold is heading into this Galaxy Far, Far Away to tell the story of the first Jedi 25,000 years before the events of the Skywalker Saga, while Dave Filoni plans to bring together Disney+'s TV shows for an epic crossover event set in The Mandalorian's timeframe.

However, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's untitled project, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise the role of Rey, is thought to be up first and a 2025 release looks likely.

There are some concerns, though, as we've heard about creative issues behind the scenes which saw original writers Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson replaced by Steven Knight. Now, a new rumour shared on The Hot Mic podcast (via SFFGazette.com) suggests that when this Star Wars movie lost Lindelof, it lost its original lead star as well.

An unnamed actor was supposedly part of his pitch to Lucasfilm, and we've previously heard that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who worked with Lindelof on Watchmen, was that star. Whoever it was is no longer part of the project as a result of rewrites which have either changed the role significantly or written the character out. It's also speculated that the actor chose to walk away when the writer did.

As we've noted, Ridley wasn't expected to be the movie's lead, though these rewrites might change that. With John Boyega's Finn now expected to be part of this follow-up to The Rise of Skywalker (it's set 15 years after the events of that story), it's possible he's the movie's new main character; it's simply too soon to say.

Kennedy recently told reporters that the current version of the script is set to be finished by May, and this latest report claims that pre-production begins in August with cameras then rolling next February.

While casting news is surely imminent, all we really know is that the movie will tell the story of rebuilding the New Jedi Order and the powers that rise to tear it down.

This whole situation is making me mad… Yahya is such a great and solid actor, and if he really was the lead that they planned on having, I hope that they use him. I just enjoy seeing brothers in Star Wars. But Lindelof‘s project really could’ve been something special if they let him cook.

And now we have a movie for Rey that wasn’t even originally intended to have Rey. And I’m already having a bad feeling that it’s gonna show in the writing/execution of the movie. To the point where it seems so unnecessary in having this film.

Kennedy doesn't mind pushing talents away so long as she gets to shove her self-insert character in movies people don't want, directed by an activist.

Bold move, let's see if it pays off ! (SPOILERS: it won't)

I’m least excited for this film and feel we are in for another mediocre Kathleen Kennedy movie with heavy studio interference and directed by a hired gun.

Think it would be cool to see if it's about Rey's or Ben's kid and this new lead is their mentor as Rey is probably off doing other stuff (since she didn't really have a parentfigure around to follow example from)

I’ve started watching Peaky Blinders by Steven Knight and it’s really good and has given me a lot of hope for this project. I’m glad Lindelof was replaced. I haven’t trusted his judgment since he botched Lost so hard.

@CassianAndor - Knight is a fart in the wind compared to Lindelof. Watchmen is better than the rubbish Knight puts out.

@McMurdo - Have you seen Peaky Blinders? If Knight’s writing for Star Wars is half as good as that show then we’re in good hands.

Lindelof is a hack. Everything he’s attached to has been disappointing. Lost. Prometheus. Star Trek Into Darkness. Watchmen. Yeah, Watchmen too. Disappointing might be the wrong word for that one since I don’t really know what I was expecting. Underwhelming maybe. On its own it’s fine I guess, but it never really hooked me. My interest only really came from its connection to the comic and compared to the comic it’s nonsense.

Lindelof had his chance with big budget and genre fare. I’m not impressed. Peaky Blinders manages to impress me almost every episode. I’m much more interested in seeing what Knight has to offer here. Who knows, he could be the next Tony Gilroy. Imagine a Star Wars gangster show that’s actually good.

Since this is a one movie story. I can see it being about some threat appearing from the outer regions (Yuuzhan Vong/Grysk) leading to the galaxy to need the Jedi Order to step forward and become the galaxy police again.

Lucasfilm wants to avoid more bad publicity, so I don’t think changing Lindelof’d script was a decision made lightly. I believe one of two things happened:

1. The script was so bad, they ditched it early (doubtful).
2. The script was great, but they decided to shoehorn characters in to make the movie fit in better with their new Jedi Order story.

I think it’s the latter, and Lindelof decided he didn’t want to see his vision go the way of Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN.
